  1. Ch 1.6 Intro to Fractions

  2. Objectives: • Define fractions • Equivalent fractions • Simplifying fractions • Converting improper fractions and mixed numbers

  3. A fraction is a number that names a part of a whole or group and is composed of two parts: • Denominator (bottom number) which gives the number of equal parts into which the unit is divided. • Numerator (top number) which gives the number of parts that are being described.

  4. Equivalent fractions are fractions that are equal in value even though they are expressed using different numbers. Are examples of equivalent fractions.

  5. Equivalent fractions can be obtained in two ways: • Multiply both numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number. • Divide both numerator and denominator by the same nonzero value. • These rules are used to reduce a fraction to simplest form and when adding/subtracting fractions with different denominators.

  6. A fraction is in simplest form or reduced when the numerator and denominator have no common factor other than 1.

  7. To simplify a fraction, divide the numerator and denominator by the greatest common factor (largest number that evenly divides into each). Example:

  8. To simplify a fraction using a calculator, enter the fraction and press =.

  9. Simplifying special fractions: • Any nonzero number over itself is 1. • Any number over 1 is equal to that number. • Zero over any nonzero number is zero. • Any number over zero is undefined.

  10. Simplify each fraction:

  11. A proper fraction is a fraction whose numerator is less than the denominator. An improper fraction is a fraction in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator.A mixed number is a whole number plus a proper fraction.

  12. To change an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole number part. The remainder over the denominator is the fraction part of the mixed number.

  13. To do this using a calculator enter the improper fraction and press =.

  14. Change each fraction to a mixed number in simplest form.

  15. To change a mixed number into an improper fraction, multiply the whole number part by the denominator, add to the numerator and place the result over the denominator.

  16. This can be done using a calculator that has the key A b/c <>d/e.
