Why Were These Health Departments Interested in Accreditation? • Transparency and Accountability • Most other governmental and health related services are accredited: hospitals, schools, child care centers, police departments, fire departments, etc. • Provides a priority setting framework • Commitment to improving their services • Increased public engagement and support • Increased staff morale • Potential for increased funding in the future; already using their accreditation certificate in grant proposals

Revised Standards and Measures (Version 1.5) • Areas for new emphasis • Health Equity • Public Health Ethics • Public Health Communication Science • Public Health Workforce • Public Health Informatics • Editorial changes for clarity • To be released January 2014; effective July 1, 2014. • Special newsletter edition September 12, 2013 highlights the details for health departments on deciding which version to use

  10. What About Related Documents? • Glossary will be revised with Version 1.5 • The Guide will remain 1.0 until its revision later in 2014, and then it will be generic • Most other documents will also move to a generic document • There will be webinars

  11. Accredited Health Departments and Annual Reporting

Annual Reports • Accredited health departments will begin to submit annual reports in March 2014 • This is part of the service that PHAB provides • Categories include general updates, Accreditation Committee specific requests, QI reports, and emerging public health issues • PHAB will host a webinar on the final requirements in early 2014

What Do the Fees Cover? • An assigned accreditation specialist to guide the health department through the application process • Site visit, including a comprehensive review of the health department’s operations against the national accreditation standards by a team of peer review experts • In-person training for the department’s accreditation coordinator • Subscription to PHAB’s online accreditation information system, making it easier and more cost-efficient for departments to participate in accreditation • Annual quality improvement support and guidance for 5 years • Contribution to a growing network of accredited local health departments contributing to the evidence base for public health
