  2. Expectations of a tutorial • Refer to your schedule and come prepared • Bring: Your journal to write in and any requirements outlined on your schedule sheet. • Be on time • Commit to the class.

  3. The lecture relationship to tutorial etc: • 10 – 15 minutes will be spent at the beginning of each tutorial session to discuss the lecture and any issues / questions that arise from this. • Be prepared for any listed exercises/ workshops • 10 -15 minutes will be spent at the end of each tutorial session to discuss any concerns or 1:1 issues that emerge or extra help you may need.

Assessment Due Dates • RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT DUE: 6 SEPTEMBER 2010 25% (Formative 16 August) • SEMINAR ASSIGNMENT DUE: WEEK 10 IN STUDIO (In tutorials 20 September) • JOURNAL DUE: 12 NOVEMBER (Formative week beginning 11 October) 25% • BLOG ASSIGNMENT DUE: 8 NOVEMBER (Formative week beginning 18 October) 25%

Refining your journal to date • Wk 9: Starting your Blog • Wk 10: SEMINAR PRESENTATION & Starting your Blog Assignment • Week 11: HAND IN JOURNAL (formative)& Getting your blog sorted- half way through (at least) • Finishing off Blog & HAND IN BLOG (formative) • Week 12: Expanding on your journal • Week 13 -14: Finishing your journal & Blog off. • Nov 8: BLOG DUE • Nov 12: JOURNAL DUE

  6. The Research Assignment: Due Sep 6 Requirements: Complete the following as a document in accordance with the presentation of written work guidelines in the Academic Studies Handbook. Include images throughout and be sure to use the referencing guidelines (also in the handbook). You need to cover the following • Identify an artist, designer or studio for whom you can find at least 3 influences (Make sure that the work that this individual or studio makes, inspires you and that it is someone whose work you admire). • Identify and document a range of works from your artist/designer/studio that explains the range and history of their practice. • Identify and document the names (and examples of their work) of 3 artists or designers that influence the artist/designer/studio you have chosen. • Document other information does your artist/designer/studio use to make their work and to understand their subject matter: • Visual matter such as places, graphs, maps, art, … • Other information such as: social issues, statistics, oral stories, literature, music, cultural issues, histories, or information from science or nature, or… • Explain what you think that the artist is interested in. Provide written examples to provide evidence of your explanation (either artist statements or writing about the artist by another person). • Choose 2 works from your artist/designer/studio that you think best communicates the artist/designer/studio interests that you have identified. • Carefully explain in paragraph format the following: - How the visual imagery is evidence that the artist is communicating the issues that you have identified. - How the media & format of the work helps to communicate the issues that you have identified in the     artists work. - How the written information you have provides extra evidence of your interpretation. - How the influences (see number 3 above) of the artist can be seen in the work itself

  7. The Seminar: Due Week 10 Sep 20 • Requirements: • Present a slide show using powerpoint or a similar application. The seminar must be longer than 3 minutes but no longer than 5 minutes. • You must hand in an A4 digital copy of the points you cover as well as a list of the sources you have used. No A4 document, no assessment grade. • Choose either question A or B:

THE RESEARCH TREE • Going back at least 3 generations of artist/designers discuss the links and connections between your chosen artist at least their art or design influence. • Explain what you have learnt from writing this seminar. NB: An artist’s work has a genealogy. Historical influences that shape the work. It is this genealogy that we want you to explore and that in this context we are calling ‘The Research Tree’ B. MY RESEARCH PRACTICE INFLUENCES • Explain using specific examples the way in which the artist/designer/studio research method has influenced the way that you work or your practice. • Explain what you have learnt from writing this seminar

The Journal: Due Nov 12 Requirements: Make a document that records the weekly lectures and tutorials as well as evidencing your independent follow up/research of artists and designers you have been introduced to in class. It should include pictures as well as articles and writing, that you have read, as well as include your comment on these items. • Lecture notes organised and dated including visual images to support the notes you make. • At least 6 documents from self directed gallery visits or movies or artists of interest. Also you own evaluation or analysis of the work you have researched that relate to this. • At least 6 documents that show you have researched independently artists shown in studio or the lecture, including guest lecturers. Also you own evaluation or analysis of the work you have researched. • Tutorial notes organised and dated including visual images to support the notes you make.

  10. The Blog: Due Nov 8 Requirements: Complete the following in a blog document: • Begin by identifying 3 favourite works from your own practice. Post them on your blog and briefly explain why you have selected these works. • Post at least one example of written research that is relevant to your work from the following internet contexts; a dictionary site, a gallery site, an electronic resource from the Unitec library catalogue, and an artist site. Each of these must be referenced correctly. • Write a comment to explain the relevance of these research contexts. • Now post at least 3 works from other artist/designers that are relevant to the works that you have posted of your own. • Write a comment to explain the relevance of these art contexts.

  12. How to identify your Artist/ Designer/ Studio. • Look at previous research notes. • Look at information your studio tutors are giving you in the area of your choice. • Brainstorm your work, subject matter and key visual elements and interests. Use some key points that emerge from this and key these into a search: See what comes up. • Browse in the library (journals and survey shows). • Talk to your friends and tutors.

  13. How to write about this: Make initial notes: • Photocopy/ download and print out notes • Highlight key points • Describe things you like, use your own words • Draw relationships between your own ideas/ likes etc with the things you have noted that are the words of others. • Use others words to substantiate what you like and think is important. (Use quotes etc when you do this) • Cluster ideas together that are similar.Formulate these into paragraphs. • This is a good start that can be constantly refined as you go, working your way through the assignment.

  14. Come prepared for next week: That means: • Bring your journal • Bring 3 -5 examples of Artist/ designer/ studio work from various times in their working life to next weeks tutorial. • Bring any questions or concerns with you.
