    1. Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) GIS Training and Spray Area Mapping Introduction to PDAs (Photos courtesy of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

    2. PDA = Pretty Darn Amazing! Using PDAs for: Rapid mapping Household list Selecting a sample Navigating back to the household (HH) or point of interest (POI) Collecting data With quality control

    3. DPD and PDAs Have used Palm and Pocket PCs for data collection in surveys since 2002: Used in many countries. Zambia National Malaria Indicator Survey 2006. IDSR supervisory visits.

    4. PDAs for Data Collection Quality control at the point of data collection Eliminates the need for data entry from forms Rapid production of preliminary analyses Standard approach (+)

    5. The Dell Axim X51 Costs around $500 with all options ($400 w/o GPS). Screen is highly visible in bright sun. Has both CF and SD slots. Has a 12-hr battery.

    6. PDA Features Can have GPS unit for mapping and an SD memory card to back up data.

    7. PDAs in the Field We put the PDA inside a box to protect from: Drops (cushioning inside) Weather/sand/water

    8. PDA Data Collection Edit data at the point of collection Live skip patterns Turn off unneeded features (games/buttons) Secure data back-up SD card

    9. Parts of the PDA Software GPS mapping/sampling Sample selection GPS navigation back to HHs PDA-based interview PC-based analysis package

    10. GPS Sampling within a Village Sampling designs are basically the same as we have always used. The program will either choose a simple random sample of HHs or a randomly selected cluster of HHs, except within a village.

    11. Household Listing and Sampling a Village with PDA/GPS For household (HH) listing, move from house to house entering data. For sampling, tell the program how many HHs to sample from the village, with known probability of selection. Send file of selected HHs to the navigation program.

    12. GPS Mapping System Simple, fast Village name (auto carry) HH number (auto increment) Comment (e.g., the house in the middle, family name) Allows multiple mappers

    13. Advantages of GPS-based Probability-based Sampling SRS – minimum variance sampling Any HH in village can be a part of sample You know the probability of selection for a HH (i.e., a probability sample) Spatial analyses

    14. GPS Navigation Software Guides the interviewer back to the sample HH List of HH IDs with distance and compass direction/pointer

    15. GPS Navigation Software, Cont. Also provides a map of HHs. Can mark HH off list. Can divide a list.

    16. Data Aggregation District staff or supervisor will download data to a PC MS Access/Epi2000 format database

    17. Logistics Battery charging Checking data Workload management

    18. Training Training materials available for the GPS mapping, sampling, navigation system Training materials available for IRS household listing
