  2. Objective: • I will be able to compare the differences among the three major perspectives on social stratification. Language Objective: • I will be able to write a one page response to a reading, including a conclusion that sums up my thinking.

  3. Theories of Stratification • Functionalist Theory • The most qualified people fill the most important positions and are rewarded for their efforts. • Inequalities exist because certain jobs are more important than others. • Monetary compensation encourages people to make sacrifices.

  4. Theories of Stratification • Conflict Theory • Inequality exists because some people are willing to exploit others. • Stratification is based on force. • Legal system is used by the wealthy for their benefit. • Political system is skewed toward the interest of the powerful.

Symbolic Interaction • American children are taught that a person’s social class is the result of talent and effort. • Those at the top “worked hard”. • Those at the bottom “lack talent or motivation”. • Looking glass process at work: • Those at the top blame the victims • Those at the bottom blame themselves.

  6. Another Time • You Are What You Wear • Read p. 249 and complete Think It Over on your paper. • Write a one page response. Include an introduction and conclusion.
