  3. Classroom Management Stop Light Behavior System – information from your teacher has been sent home. Think About It Forms Quiet Cubes Class Compliments – Brownie Points Pride Punch Cards Class Coupons Positive notes or a phone call home Responsibility Club (Fun Friday)/Quiet Room (Incomplete Work/Behavior Expectations not met)

  4. Attendance Attendance is very important. Please be on time to school as we start promptly at 8:40. If your child is absent you have the same number of days that they were absent to make up the work. If you are going on vacation, work will not be sent with your child. They will have a folder of work that they must complete when they return. Some missed work cannot be made up and missed instruction can lead to a student falling behind.

  5. Grades First Graders are given percentage grades on their report cards in most content areas. Progress reports are available halfway through each quarter in Infinite Campus. Report cards are given at the end of each quarter through Infinite Campus. Standard Grading Scale

  6. Spalding * Daily Spalding Lesson consists of 4 parts: Phonogram Practice (OPR and WPR), Spelling Dictation and practice, Writing, and Reading. * Oral and written phonograms are practiced daily with tests being on Friday. * Phonogram Cards are a MUST.  You may purchase these through www.spalding.org in the “store” section. They are $14.00

  7. Spelling Phonograms – Students must be introduced to the first 46 phonograms before spelling begins – We will begin spelling the week of August 19th. Spelling Dictation – 10 words Monday, 10 words Tuesday and 10 words on Wednesday. Pre-Test is on Thursday – all 30 words – If a student receives 100% on their spelling pre-test they do not have to retake the test on Fridays. Test is given Friday morning.

Reading Houghton Mifflin Harcourt - Journeys Aligned to Common Core Standards Vocabulary development Develops comprehension skills through mental actions: monitoring comprehension, making connections, predicting, reformatting, summarizing. Reading grades based on weekly comprehension and vocabulary tests Poetry Recitations - Quarterly

  10. Accelerated Reader AR will not be given as a grade on your child’s report card; however, it is a requirement for CTA. Your student’s goal is to read and pass 11 AR tests with 80% accuracy. We will begin AR second quarter. Reading level is determined by a combination of STAR test and teacher assessments. STAR tests will be discussed with you at Parent/Teacher Conferences in August. www.arbookfind.com– to find a book level.

  11. Math Saxon Math – Spiraling Program Daily Homework – Each day your child’s homework will be a review of the lesson that was covered in class that day. Please check your child’s homework every night and assist them when needed. **Please provide your child with “real money” for math: 20 pennies, 5 nickels, 10 dimes and 6 quarters.** - We will send out an email with this information for you.

  13. First Grade Field Trips Field Trips: We are planning to go on 2 or 3 different field trips this year. We will need parent volunteers for all field trips. Information will come home with the permission slips. Please pay your field trip fees. Field Trip fees can be paid on Infinite Campus. Fees will be $20.00.

  14. Homework * Homework will come home daily (M-Th). * The cover sheet will require your signature. * Incomplete homework will be completed during afternoon recess. * Homework is due at 8:40 a.m. – Do not bring your child’s homework back to school for them. * Homework includes minimum of 10 minutes of reading per night and a review of math facts & spelling. * Phonogram practice as needed – especially those new to Spalding.

  15. Lunch Please send all money in an envelope with your child’s first and last name and teacher’s name. Lunches are $2.95. Put money in lunch account online. www.myschoolbucks.com 11:00 – 11:15 - Recess 11:20 – 11:40 - Eating lunch

  16. Specials We are on a 6 day rotation. Please wear tennis shoes on P.E. days.  Please remember library books on library days.  Technology is now 40 minutes.

  17. Communication Newsletter sent home weekly (email) Teacher Website School communication – Patterson Post & Konstella (Signups for P/T Conferences are done through Konstella) Contact teacher – note, email, phone call Graded Work Folders - weekly Change in dismissal must be made before 2:30. Please call the office – do not email the teacher. Play Dates – must have written note & can only be parent pick-up.

  18. Odds and ends... Birthdays – Celebrated at recess (1:00), store bought items only –we also ask that all snacks be the same (i.e. all vanilla frosted donuts) - please send your child’s teacher a note or email a few days ahead of time so that she can adjust her lesson plans for that day. – No birthday invitations can be handed out at school unless every child in the class is being invited Personal Belongings – Please do not bring toys to school. We will not be responsible for lost or misplaced personal belongings. If your child has a smart watch they need to keep it in their backpack during the day as they can be a distraction to themselves and students around them. Snack – We will have snack at recess. Send a simple snack if you would like. Water bottle – Water bottles are strongly recommended. Water only. If frozen, please put a sock around the bottle.

  19. Healthy Students are Better Students • Students who eat healthy are more attentive, have a stronger memory, learn easier, and are in better moods. • Some healthy foods include: cheese, nuts, whole grains, yogurt, fruit, vegetables, and hard boiled eggs.

  20. Volunteer in our Classroom! Volunteers A volunteer interest form was sent home during Meet the Teacher Night. Teachers will contact you individually if you are interested in helping with your child’s classroom. If your interested in being a Copy Parent for First Grade, please email your child’s teacher.

  21. How can I help Patterson? Tax Credit – All fieldtrips are funded by tax credit. Please consider donating to your child’s classroom/grade level • $400 married • -$200 single • Any amount helps – suggested min. is $25 • Online is the best option through Infinite Campus. It is very easy and you can print out a receipt for your records. Some companies will match your donation – check with your HR department BEFORE donating!!

  22. Arizona law ARS 43-1089.01 enables taxpayers a tax credit contribution of up to $400.00 per calendar year if filing status is Married, filing Joint Return; $200.00 per calendar year if filing status is Single or Head of Household; and, $200.00 per calendar year if filing status is Married filing separate return — for contributions that fund extracurricular activities in public schools. A tax credit is a full refund, not a deduction. YOUR TAX CREDIT DOLLARS AT WORK WHERE DO THE DONATIONS GO? • Tax Credit Donations go directly to Patterson and • provide our students with many great opportunities for enrichment • These are just a few ways your donations make a difference in your child’s education: • Fieldtrips For Every Grade: Art, Science and History Museums, Phoenix Zoo, Odyssea Aquarium, Sonora Desert Museum, 6th grade Science Camp and many others. Each fieldtrip is based on state learning standards that coincide with current classroom lessons • Assemblies : The Be Kind Crew in July and January • Character Education • Clubs: Chorus, Running Club, Spirit Line, Kindness Club, Coding Club, Battle of the Books, Spelling Bee and more! • Thank you for helping to make Patterson an AMAZING place to learn and grow. • Donate can be made through the CUSD website or your Infinite Campus “Fee Payment” link • Please feel free to call the office if you have questions: 480-224-3607

  23. How can I help my child? Practice phonograms nightly www.spalding.org Correct and reinforce proper handwriting - Spalding letter formation/pencil grip/handwriting rules kept in binder Help your child stay organized Practice Math Facts Check your child’s backpack & white binder every day and show your child how interested you are in what they are learning. Project Be Kind – This is a school wide program we will be implementing this year. It focuses on initiating positive social change. More information is to come.

  24. Indoor Recess Due to temperatures being so high right now, most of our recess time is in the classroom. If you have any games or puzzles at home you’d like to donate, please feel free. 
