Registration Terminology • Required Courses: Courses required for graduation • Required Elective vs. Elective Course: Electives required for graduation vs. optional electives • Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre_Ap): Courses that must be taken before the advanced placement courses • Advanced Placement (AP): The advanced placement program gives students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still in high school and to receive advanced placement credit upon completion of the AP Exam with an acceptable score. • Advance Measures - 1 measure can be any of the following: Score of a 3 or higher on end-of-year AP Exam ACC class with a grade of 3.0 or higher PSAT score that qualifies as a “Commended Scholar” or higher

  5. 9th Grade Classes Required 9th Grade Core Courses • English 1 (2 semesters) • Math – Algebra 1, Geometry, or Geometry Pre-Ap (2 semesters) • Social Studies – World Geography or World Geography Pre-Ap (2 semesters) • Science – Biology or Biology Pre-Ap (2 semesters)

  6. Required Elective Classes • P.E. 1 & ½ credits (3 semesters) • Health ½ credit (1 semester) • Technology Applications 1 credit (2 semesters) • Foreign Language 2-3 credits (4-6 semesters) • Fine Arts 1 credit (2 semesters) • Speech ½ credit (1 semester)

  7. What is a credit? • Credit is what your student will earn for completing and passing each class. • Each semester class at Lockhart H.S. is worth ½ credit. • Classes that are 2 semesters (full year) are worth 1 credit. • The class of 2015 needs 26 credits to graduate.

Credits Students who take 8 classes per semester can earn 4.0 credits per semester (8 credits possible in one year) • 8 X 4 = 32 credits possible • 26 credits required for graduation • Students can start earning High School credits in the 8th grade in Junior High School for the following classes: • Communication Applications ½ credit • Health = ½ credit • Algebra 1 = 1 credit • Spanish 1 = 1 credit • Dance 1 = 1 credit Some students will start the 9th grade with 3-4 credits!

Physical Education 1 and ½ credits Can be satisfied through waivers for (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC), Athletics and Marching Band Health ½ credit – Health class or Health Science Technology Speech ½ credit – Communication Applications Technology Applications 1 credit Bus Info Mgt, Digital & Interactive Media, Animation, Computer Programming, Yearbook Fine Arts 1 Credit Art, Music, Theater, Theater Tech, Choir, or Dance Foreign Language 2-3 credits – same language Spanish or German

  12. Foreign Language • Lockhart offers Spanish and German • Lockhart Junior High (LJH) offers Spanish 1 • If your student chose to take Spanish 1 in the 8th grade, and passed the class successfully your student will be placed in Spanish Level 2 when he/she registers for the 9th grade.

Registration Form • Students must indicate their schedule choice. • Traditional (8 courses) • Print the student’s name and last name on the form. • Students must choose 4 core courses: English, Math, Science, Social studies, 3 of the required electives and one elective of their choice – CTE is an option. • Select required core courses first (English, Math, Social Studies, Science, then 3 required electives – Foreign Language, Fine Arts, PE, Technology Apps), then an elective course of your choice.

  14. Registration continued… • Don’t forget to register for Foreign Language • Parents must sign the registration form. • Alternate courses must be filled out and be different from already selected 8 courses. • List one course per line.

What is Achieve Texas? • Achieve Texas is designed to help students (and their parents) make wise education choices • It is based on the belief that the curricula of the 21st century should combine rigorous academics with relevant career education • When schools integrate academic and technical education, students can see the “usefulness” of what they are learning • The system also facilitates the transition from secondary to postsecondary opportunities

  20. What is CTE? Career and technical education (CTE) prepares both youth and adults for a wide range of careers and further educational opportunities. These careers may require varying levels of education—including industry-recognized credentials, postsecondary certificates, and two- and four-year degrees.
