  2. Geography • Location: Mountainous land locked country in central Asia. Its boarders by Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and China. • Climate: mid-latitude continental, hot summers, mild winters. Semiarid to polar in Pamir Mountains • A little smaller than Wisconsin!

  3. General Information • Population:7,995,754 • Gender break down: 0-14 years: 33.9% (male 1,316,623/female 1,270,899) 15-64 years: 62.7% (male 2,368,554/female 2,413,982) 65 years and over: 3.4% (male 108,896/female 148,246) (2011 est.)

  4. More General Information… • Religion: 85 percent Sunni Muslim, 5 percent Shia Muslim, other 10% (2003 est.) • Ethnic Groups: Tajik 79.9%, Uzbek 15.3%, Russian 1.1%, Kyrgyz 1.1%, other 2.6%. • Languages: Official language, is Tajik. Russian is also used widely.

  5. Education • Literacy Rates: Children 15 and over can read and write total population: 99.5 percent male 99.7 percent female: 99.2 percent. • Percent of Budget for Education: 3.5% of GDP.

  6. Health • Percent of $ spent on health: 5.3% of GDP. • Life expectancy: male: 62.97 years female: 69.25 years. • Infant Mortality:38.54 deaths/1,000 live births.

  7. Government • Type: REPUBLIC. • Current Leader: Emomalii Rahmon • Stability: Pretty stable some small political conflicts.

  8. Economics • Income per Capita: 2,000 dollars • Industry: aluminum, cement, vegetable oil • Agriculture products: cotton, grain, fruits, grapes, vegetables; cattle, sheep, goats

  9. United States Relationships • Allies?: We are in a bilateral relations with Tajikistan. • We assist Tajikistan in humanitarian aid after there civil war. • We also have a broad based relationship in counter narcotics and counter terrorism.

  10. Sharia • Sharia in Tajikistan is used but not heavily enforced. The people of Tajikistan are turning to sharian law. • Sharia in the legal system is active for some crimes but not used in murders or other hard crimes.

  11. Human Rights • Torture: There is some small cases of torture but that was in the late 1990’s. • Women: Women in Tajikistan are treated fairly but still do not have that many rights. • There are not very many cruel or unusual events of punishment throughout Tajikistan.

  12. Current Event • On October 7, the ambassador Richard Boucher, Assistant Secretary for south and central Asia went to the office of Internews Network in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Internews was the only one of the Assistant Secretary visited during his visit to Tajikistan, a trip aimed at promoting bilateral relations and cooperation between the United States and Tajikistan.
