War in Afghanistan • US intervened in Afghani civil war to take out Al-Qaeda • Taliban were fighting civil war against the Northern Alliance • Taliban had been in control of Afghanistan’s government and hosted Al-Qaeda and its leader • US intervened and help to put President HamidKarzai in power after Taliban was removed (2001)

Al-qaeda • War in Afghanistan was prompted by the September 11, 2001 attacks • US identified that Osama Bin Laden & Al-Qaeda were responsible for the attacks • US recognized that Taliban was harboring Al-Qaeda & Bin Laden • US demanded Bin Laden & Al-Qaeda leaders be handed over • Taliban recommended they leave the country but refused • US intervened in Afghanistan

Taliban • US removed Taliban from power • Established transitional government & put HamidKarzai in power in 2001 • In 2004 Karzai was elected to the new permanently established government • Taliban maintained control of many villages & rural areas while government held more populated areas • Interesting Fact: Taliban controls much of the poppy production in Afghanistain which they sell to for money—poppy is used to make opium

Nato & US • After the invasion in 2001 the UN set up the ISAF • ISAF: International Security Assistant Force • Trained Afghan army and oversaw security • NATO stepped in and took control of the ISAF in 2003 • US & NATO forces continue to battle Taliban in the countryside & villages to this day

Osama • Osama Bin Laden was believed to be harbored by the Taliban • Lived in Afghanistan, almost captured in Tora Bora, fled to Pakistan • Osama Bin Laden was found in Abottabad, Pakistan in 2011 • US military raided his compound in Pakistan and killed Osama Bin Laden • Bin Laden was given a burial at sea in 2011 right after he was killed • Zero Dark Thirty was based on that raid

Fighting • War in Afghanistan was fought using guerilla war tactics by the Taliban • Used the mountainous terrain to their advantage • Blended in with civilian population • Used suicide bombers/shooters to infiltrate NATO forces • Infiltrated ranks of Afghan Army to attack NATO troops from within • Used civilian human shields • Very similar tactics to Vietnam • Taliban wants NATO troops to pull out so they have free reign to take over the government

  9. restrepo • SebastionJunger & Tim Hetherington were embedded with the 503rd Airborne of the US Army • Follows their 15 month deployment into the Korengal Valley in the mountains of Northeast Afghanistan • They defended the OP (observation post) Restrepo named after PFC Juan Restrepo • PFC Juan Sebastian Restrepo was a medic killed there
