Economic Woes after the Civil War • Greenbacks lead to inflation • Could not be exchanged for gold • US responds by cutting amount of currency leads to deflation • Stops making silver coin and greenbacks and pays off bonds • High interest rates under inflation • Farmers are some of the largest debtors

  7. The Grange • Oliver H Kelly, Department of Agriculture • Patrons of Husbandry: 1st farmers organization • Cooperatives: increase price decrease costs • Similar to a Trust • Doesn’t really work

  8. Farmers Alliance • Large cooperatives called exchanges • Small success but ultimately failed as well
