  1. IEEE Sensors Journal H. Troy Nagle (Editor-in-Chief)Biomedical Engineering NC State University and UNC Chapel Hill(919) 515-3578 (919) 513-3814 (fax) nagle@ncsu.edu Presented to IEEE Sensor Council ADCOM October 28, 2004

  2. State of the IEEE Sensors Journal • Background • Statistics • Special issues • Future plans

  3. Background • EIC Transition • Feb. 03: Meeting at Piscataway (SPS & LEOS) • Apr. 03: Panel of Editors meeting • Jun. 03: Lumelsky’s last issue • Aug. 03: Nagle’s first issue • SPS to LEOS Transition • Aug. 03: Linda Matarazzo replaced Jo-Ellen Snyder • Oct. 03: Last SPS complete issue • Dec. 03: SPS & LEOS joint issue • Feb. 04: LEOS fully responsible

  4. SJ Statistics • Active Editors: 45 • Bimonthly Issues • Page Budgets/Actuals • 2001: 416 (396 to 436)/400 • 2002: 720 (684 to 756)/720 • 2003: 928 (882 to 974)/888 • 2004: 1,200 (lowered to 930)/est. 932 • 2005: 976 • 2006: TBD • Add 44 to 88 pages a year ––> balance growth versus Council income, while maintaining a one-to-two issue backlog of accepted papers.

  8. Manuscript Statistics

  9. 2003/03 SJ Statistics *NOTES: * Due to the clearing of old manuscripts from 2001 and early 2002. ** Due in part to novice GEs for three special issues.

  10. What Metrics Are important? • Time from submission to reviewer assignment (Linda + AEs = 2 wks) • Time to first decision (+ Reviewers + AEs = + 5 wks) • Time from Author revision to decision (AEs = 1 wk) • Time from Author files complete to Page Proofs (+ Linda + Pub. Production = 6 wks) • Time from Corrected Page Proofs to Web Posting (+ Pub. Production = 1 week) • Total (14 to 15 weeks plus author delays)

  11. Special Issues • 2003 • Optical Fiber Sensors (Feb. 2003) • Biosensors (Jun. 2003) • SENSORS 2002 (Oct. & Dec. 2003) • 2004 • Microsensor & Microactuators (Aug. 2004) • 2005 • Sensors for Industrial Process Tomography (Apr. 2005) • Sensors for the Prevention of Terrorist Acts (Aug. 2005)

  12. Special Issues • Approval Procedure • Potential Guest editors send a proposal to the EIC • EIC works with potential guest editors to refine the concept • EIC sends proposal to the Editorial Board for review and comments • Feedback is incorporated into the project • If the AEs’ reactions are favorable, the SI is approved and the Call for Papers is posted on the website and published in the Journal • An announcement is sent by e-mail to 10,000 names on the e-mail list (maintained by John Vig). • Future Plans • Two to three SIs per year

  13. Soliciting Manuscripts • SENSORS 2004, 2005, etc. • Booth to solicit attendees • E-mail invitation in November, reminder in January. • Transducers ‘05, ‘07, etc. • Booth to solicit attendees • Revisions with Authors • AEs to search their databases • Invited Papers • Conference Keynote Speakers as lead-ins to Special Issues (when appropriate)

  14. Citation Index & Impact Factor • Process • Three consecutive issues mailed on time. • Process of collecting data then begins. • Data gathering process takes two years. • Schedule • Since LEOS joined our team, SJ issue are being mailed on time, and the most recent issues went out early. • Data gathering began in mid 2004. • Process should be completed in 2006.

  15. Proposal for Senior AEs • Description: • An award for excellent service • Limit number to 5 or 6 • Two-year term (renewable once for potential EIC candidates) • Qualifications/Selection Process: • Four years of exemplary service • Nominated by EIC, approved by VP Pubs • Justification: • Most productive AEs are about to retire – need a way to retain their expertise • Establishes a competitive process to generate multiple viable EIC candidates

  16. Summary • Administration Overview • LEOS support is excellent! • Backlog of old manuscripts has been cleared. • Our statistical measures are improving. • Current highest priorities are 1) soliciting SIs for 2006 and 2007, and 2) recruiting new AEs. • Future Activities • Annual Award for SJ Best Paper (Journal Editorial Board will participate in the process) • Being in the Citation Index is extremely important! • Six issues per year, growing to 200 pages per issue, and beyond. • Develop even closer ties with the IEEE SENSORS conference to ensure a steady stream of high-quality manuscripts. • Two to three Special Issues per year will keep the Journal at the forefront of emerging technologies.
