  2. Background *Born in Oakville, Alabama *Lived on a farm *He was sick a lot *Had a brother and a sister *Picked cotton on the farm *He moved a lot

  3. 1935 • Jesse broke 5 records in Michigan University • Jesse Owens asked Ohio State if he go there for school. They said no, but then they said yes because they wanted a fast runner. • He was not the best student, and he wasn’t treated very well. Jesse Owens was the fastest person inthe world.

  4. 1936 • Jesse got to go to the Olympics in Germany. • Jesse won 4 Olympic medals in Germany: 400 meter 100 meter, long jump, and a team medal.

  5. 1970 • He wrote a book called I Always Loved Running. • He was proud. Some people liked that he was proud, and some people did not.

  6. 1972 • Some people did not like the book and started to write angry letters to Jesse. • White people did not like it out of all people.

  7. 1979 • President Jimmy Carter gave Jesse a gold medal at the White House. • He got many other awards. • Jesse got medals from the President and from the Olympics.

  8. traits *DETERMINED Jesse is determined because in the Olympics, he had three jumps. He failed two jumps, and he still won because he did not give up. *CARING Jesse was caring because when he was in the Olympics, he made a friend. His friend was shot, so Jesse went to his parent’s house and became friends with them.

  9. Quote “If you don’t try to win, you may as well hold the Olympics in someone’s back yard.” That means you should try and not give up.
