  6. Understand current scheduling process and tools utilized • Develop report or measurement method to track number of cancellations and no shows • Identify root cause of cancellations and no-shows in endoscopy suite • Identify process changes to increase suite utilization using current resources • Optimize and improve scheduling processes • CURRENT PROJECT GOALS • NEXT STEPS • IN PROCESS • LINKAGES • National Cancer Collaborative • VISN 1 Colorectal Cancer Collaborative • Apply improvements to other VISN 1 sites Colorectal cancer

  7. Develop a tool to assist facilities to assess and optimize resource utilization in endoscope re-processing • Develop human factors design guide for facilities retrofit/new reprocessing units • CURRENT PROJECT GOALS • NEXT STEPS • IN PROCESS • LINKAGES • VERC National RME Workgroup • VACO Facilities Quality Service • VISN 1 SPD Board • Continue to develop and validate current simulation model and expand to generalizable model • Create a VB application to simplify staffing model input • Identify opportunities to improve self monitoring/auditing of SOP use for all types of RME • Pilot staffing model in additional facilities • Create project goals/action plan for a possible self monitoring tool REUSABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

  8. Missing medications post RPIW implementation • Implementation of 5S on inpatient units • Guidebook for 5S in healthcare • To increase direct patient-clinician contact time while enhancing the quality of care • RPIW for medication administration • Reduction in PT consult delays • CURRENT PROJECT GOALS • CURRENT STATE • IN PROCESS • LINKAGES care at the bedside PDA Time Study Data • MA STAAR Initiative • VHA FIX Bedside Care * 5 S Supply Reorganization

  9. Support national implementation of PCMH model • Use VISN 1 facility sites as test sites for generalizable solutions • CURRENT PROJECT GOALS • NEXT STEPS • FUTURE WORK • IN PROCESS • CURRENT PROJECT GOALS Primary Care medical home • Planning for collaborative • Collect baseline measures Industrial engineering and collaborative support to Northeast Region Develop and simplify registration processes in VISN 1 test site (JP) Develop methods to determine # registration stations, waiting room size, and clerk stations • Assess and optimize functionality of clinical spaces, e.g. My HealtheVet kiosks, patient education room, group visit room

  10. Education • Developing Role of Health Care Engineering Specialist • Year 1: 3 VERC Fellows, 2 transitioning to Improvement Specialists in VISN 1 • Year 2: 3 VERC Fellows (masters IE) for FY11 academic year – 2 in Boston, 1 in Pittsburgh • Delivering Core Curriculum for VERC fellowship • Training Existing Healthcare Clinical and Administrative Staff • Lean and microsystems training throughout VISN 1 in partnership with VISN Improvement Resource Office • Weekly academic seminar

  11. Research • Initial work to partner with academics to apply VA data to illustrate their work • VA setting is focus of PhD thesis for MIT student, others to follow • First grant awarded to Brian Shiner, “Developing Tools to Assess Quality of PTSD Care in VHA”

  12. Evaluation • Partnering with COLMR, Center for Organizational Learning and Management Research • Dashboard of Measures to quantify work done • Evaluating Impact of VERC on culture of improvement, context for change • Methods • Qualitative – interviews with teams, facility, VERC and VISN • Quantitative – AES, special employee studies
