  5. The Ohio River • The Ohio is the Mississippi’s largest tributary. • A tributary is a river that feeds into another river. • The largest river that comes from Mississippi River.

  6. The Ohio River • Ohio comes from an Iroquois word, Oyo. • It means great or large.

  7. The Ohio River • It is 975 miles long. • It runs through 6 states. • Can you name the 6 states?

  9. The Ohio River • The Ohio River floods often, especially in spring. • The flood of 1913 was one of the worst in U.S. history; 700 people died.

  10. The Ohio River • The river is actually very shallow. • Human-madedams control the water depth.

  11. The Ohio River Many animals, birds, fish and other living creatures love the river and call it home.

  12. The Ohio River Pollution is a problem for the river. Factories, businesses and people put garbage and chemicals in the water. This makes people, plants and animals sick.

  13. The Ohio River Besides fishing, people also search for crayfish and other animals. People take “log walks” on the river.
