  2. What are the Symptoms? • Bronchitis • Fatigue • Chronic Cough • Dehydration • Thick Mucus Secretions in the lungs

  3. What Causes It? • A defective gene makes the body produce a lot of mucus which builds up in the lungs and pancreas. This results in serious lung infections and digestive problems. • To develop this disease, you must inherit two abnormal genes. (one from each parent).

  5. Is There a Cure or Treatment? • There is no cure for Cystic Fibroses • But there are antibiotics and other medications that can clear air pathways and make it easier for the patient to breath.

  6. Can You Screen Individuals For This Condition? • Yes. All pregnant women and there partners can screen to see if they have the abnormal gene that is required by both parents to see if their child may have Cystic Fibrosis.

  7. Is It Common? • About 30,000 Americans have Cystic Fibrosis • Cystic Fibrosis can occur in all races, but is most common in Caucasians.

  8. Is It Socially Accepted • Yes, Cystic fibrosis is socially accepted. • There are not many physical signs of the disease, so most people cannot tell when someone has Cystic Fibrosis.
