  1. SAT Vocabulary Section 1

  2. Here’s how this will work… • You will have a vocabulary quiz every week on these terms. Each week there will be 10 new words. At the end of the nine weeks you will have a vocabulary test that will be CUMMULATIVE—meaning it will include all of the words from the 9 weeks.

  3. Prudent • Careful and sensible; marked by sound judgment.

  4. Inevitable • Incapable of being avoided or prevented.

  5. Subtle • Difficult to detect or grasp by the mind or analyze.

  6. Compromise • An accommodation in which both sides make concessions.

  7. Prosperity • The condition of prospering; having good fortune.

  8. Reverence • A feeling of profound respect for someone or something.

  9. Compassion • A deep awareness of and sympathy for another’s suffering.

  10. Diligent • Quietly and steadily persevering, especially in detail or exactness.

  11. Benevolent • Showing or motivated by sympathy and understanding and generosity.

  12. Haughty • Having or showing arrogant superiority to an disdain of those one views as unworthy.

  20. Abstain • Choose not to consume or partake in.

  21. Asylum • A shelter for danger or hardship; an institution for the maintenance and care of the mentally ill, orphans, or other persons requiring specialized assistance.

  22. Wary • Marked by keen caution and watchful prudence.

  23. Impetuous • Characterized by undue haste and lack of thought or deliberation.

  25. Foster • Providing or receiving nurture or parental care though not related by blood or legal ties • As a child in foster care, Madeline knows what it’s like to move around a lot.

  26. Superficial • being on or near the surface • It is important to not be superficial in order to lead a meaningful life.

  27. abate • Become less in amount or intensity • William begs to abate their daily homework, but to no avail.

  28. Sagacity • The mental ability to understand and discriminate between relations • Madison has the sagacity to do well in this class.

  29. Superfluous • More than is needed, desired, or required • One of these days, Chris will learn to stop the superfluous talking and complete his assignments.

  30. Vindication • Proving to be right by providing justification or proof • It’s a good feeling to receive vindication for your actions.

  31. Reconciliation • The reestablishing cordial relations • Hopefully Hayden can foster a reconciliation with Mrs. Hodges and accept that his team is not that great.

  32. Collaborate • Work together towards a common goal • I love when students collaborate during class work and work diligently to understand the material.

  33. Impute • Attribute or credit to • Students impute their good grades to hard work and determination

  34. Bias • A partiality (opinion) that prevents objective consideration of a situation • I may be bias, but Mrs. Hodges has the best students in her 3rd block here at Nansemond River High School.

  37. Capitulate • Verb • Surrender under agreed conditions • Synonyms: surrender, yield, submit

  38. Canny • Adjective • having or showing shrewdness and good judgment, esp. in money or business matters. • Synonyms: Smart, shrewd, discerning, perceptive, sharp

  39. Aesthetic • Adjective • Characterizes by an appreciation of beauty or good taste • Synonyms: artistic, tasteful • That painting has an aesthetic quality that makes it pleasing to the eye.

  40. Fortitude • Noun • Strength of mind that enables one to ensure adversity with courage • Synonyms: bravery, endurance, resilliance

  41. Brazen • Adjective • Unrestrained by convention or propriety • Synonyms: Bold, shameless, unembarrassed

  42. Emulate • Verb • Strive to equal or match, especially by imitating • Synonyms: imitate, copy, mirror, follow

  43. Boisterous • Adjective • Full of rough and exuberant animal spirits • Synonyms: rowdy, excited

  44. Conditional • Adjective • subject to one or more conditions or requirements being met; made or granted on certain terms. • Synonyms: Subject to, dependent on

  45. Frugal • Adjective • Avoiding waste • Synonym: thrifty

  50. Submissive • Adjective • Inclined or willing to submit to orders or wishes of others • Synonyms: compliant, yielding, passive
