  1. The Plan Overall Objectives: Students will be provided with opportunities to get hands on experiences relating to pioneers’ challenges faced on the move west into unfamiliar territory. Create a [graphic organizer of some sort, i.e. thinking map, etc.] The end result is that students will have to use a thinking map as a cumulative project to demonstrate how each subject area is to the experience. An alternative is to produce a series of organizers for each subject area, or perhaps one for LA and History and one for Science and Math.

  2. Instructional (student) Objectives: Students will: • (LA, HI) Keep a journal (in first person or as appropriate according to LA teachers’) about the experiences. For later use with poetry or research paper assignment. • Develop a diary with journal entries which depict experiences people would have had on the journey. • (HI, MA, SCI) Construct a vehicle for the trip (build a model) diagramming, measuring and calculating as necessary. • (SCI MA) The vehicle will be subject to a battery of tests inv • Buoyancy • Friction • Weight • Structural design (geometry)

  3. Competitive: • Each team will be competing against the other for the number of successful designs. • Winning teams will receive homework passes, school supplies, etc. (any suggestions?)

  4. Language Arts • This massive migration over the continental United States included many hardships. Based on your knowledge of the Oregon Trail, your experiments in the activities, and your knowledge of human behavior, write seven journal entries (covers one week) one of these pioneers might have written. Have six-ten sentences per entry, make your “voice” clear regarding how they “spoke” in the time period 1841-1869, and make your entries believable.

  5. Contribute to Prior Knowledge: • The idea of these experiences is to add to a base of knowledge as a frame of reference to assignments ideas to be taught in class. • Remember! ~ Identify and contribute solutions, not problems! If you have an issue with anything, please be helpful by presenting an addition to the activity which will make it better. Simply pointing out flaws will ensure that this fails. We want to be positive and create valuable teaching tool!

  6. Marzano’s Strategies • Cooperative Learning • Generating and Testing Hypotheses • Summarizing and Notetaking • Graphic Organizers

  16. Oregon Trail Assignment Objectives: Design and construct a brochure Students will show the hardships that pioneers endured over the journey westward. Explain in the brochure what the hazards of the journey are and how to have a successful trip. Address the following: Overcoming obstacles to the basic needs of survival (water, shelter, food, rest (exhaustion) Sickness (avoiding it) Diet (What food to bring, what food to expect to find on the trip) Protection / Safety (wildlife, people, hazards) How did people cope with or solve problems? Can you suggest a time period appropriate solution which is realistic? What caused people to perish? What tools or advantages were present? What would have been a good idea? (time period appropriate)

  17. Grade Means /Project Shows A Demonstrates complete understanding. Student went above and beyond to show a creative project integrating their knowledge Graphics explicitly make the reader understand. Organization is easy to follow and understand. B Demonstrates an acceptable / general level of knowledge in which you have integrated this into the project Graphics clearly connect1-2 difficulties and solutions. Organization is easy to follow and understand C Demonstrates a moderate – basic understanding or effort. Graphics relate to the hardships. Adequate explanations, organized D Demonstrates limited understanding or effort. You need to take this more seriously and not just do something for credit Poor / limited graphics Unclear / vague wording & explanations Incomplete, unorganized, time period inappropriate F Are you kidding? Do not pass go, do not collect $200!Speak to the hand

  18. Before you begin, do these: • Complete the webquest. Click on the link to go to the webquest if you still need to do it. • Plan out the project

  19. To do the project: Fold a piece of blank paper into 3 equal sections

  20. Next Close the paper brochure (fold it up)

  21. Next: A Pioneer Adventure! This is the front cover. • Add the following: • A catchy title • Illustration

  22. On the inside: Plains Mountains Desert Write about each region In the mountains it will be challenging… This is the most difficult part due to water shortage and lack of food availability On the plains you will find plenty of grass for your animals. However, mud can be a hazard! Watch out for avalanches and bears! Don’t forget to Include illustrations!
