  1. RESEARCH PRESENTATION B A NELSON SOUTH CHESHIRE COLLEGE

  2. ABOUT ME • Experienced practitioner – particularly in FE • Trained in mid 70s – middle school – possible foot in both primary and lower secondary – History and PE (?) • Settled in Cheshire – worked for Crewe & Alsager College, Cheshire County Council – Museums, Crewe secondary schools and Cheshire Police • Taught at South Cheshire College in various roles for last 26 years • Now doing my ‘dream job’ delivering HE – about education • Education ‘junkie’

  3. WHY DID I DO IT? • Part of an MA – Education Management, Leadership and Learning • One of many areas I thought would be interesting to investigate – particularly the effects on education • Quality pervades all sectors of education • Results of research may be of interest to college

  4. What did I do? The work focussed on the following • Consideration of the development of TQM in business and how it came into use in an educational setting • Views of relevant research and texts – a lot about school improvement and effectiveness • Investigation of the development of a culture of quality improvement which has developed in the college – methods used and staff perceptions • Collection of data from teaching staff in the college to gauge feelings about quality.

  5. WHAT DID I DO? • Investigated teaching staff perception and understanding of the notion of quality • Personal sub-thoughts and concerns of interest to me • Can we treat students like tins of beans • Can educational success be manufactured and replicated – like a production line • Where did quality come from • Read around the subject and found lots written about it • Conducted small scale research – which also had to be learned about

  6. WHAT I THOUGHT BEFORE RESEACH • Not many teachers understood quality? • Not everyone thought it was a good idea? • I needed to find out how/why quality came into education

  7. WHEN WAS THE RESEARCH UNDERTAKEN? • The research was undertaken in 2009 • Post incorporation (1991) • Well established quality and continuous improvement culture at the college in which the research was based • Outstanding Ofsted reports – successful college • Senior management changes – change of principal

  8. WHAT DID I FIND?

  9. WHAT DID I FIND? • Staff exhibited a high level of compliance – well trained? • Quality is a well established concept within educational management • It is a priority for college to run efficiently, effectively and be cost effective – as in business – pressure from government • What about the student and education – possibly in danger of forgetting about their impact on the quality of the service e.g. Not tins of beans??

  10. FURTHER RESEARCH • Review of the development of FE since incorporation • Role of the teacher in FE • Student expectations in FE • Student experience of FE • Is education being treated as a product?
