  8. The Cost of Following Jesus

  9. (Luke 14:26-30) "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. {27} "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. {28} "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it; {29} "lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, {30} "saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'

  10. What’s it going to cost me? • When we are talking to a salesman we want to know, “What is the bottom line? What’s it going to cost me? • There are those who say, “There is absolutely no responsibility or cost involved in our salvation.” • There is an old saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch.” • We are going to look this morning at the Cost of Following Jesus.

  11. COMMITMENT • (Luke 14:26) "If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. • (Rom 12:1) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. • (Mat 4:10) Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.'"

  12. OBEDIENCE • (Heb 5:9) And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, • (2 Cor 10:5) casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,

  13. SELF-DENIAL • (Mat 16:24a) Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself… • (Phil 2:21) For all seek their own, not the things which are of Christ Jesus

  14. TAKE UP CROSS • (Mat 16:24) Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. • (Luke 14:27) "And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

  15. If the cost of following Jesus seems too high… consider the cost of “not” following Him!

  16. CONDEMNATION • (John 3:18) "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. • (Rom 8:1) There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

  17. OUTER DARKNESS • (Mat 25:30) 'And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' • (Mat 22:13) "Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

  18. SEPARATION FROM GOD • (2 Th 1:9) These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, • (Mat 25:41) "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:

  19. TORMENT IN HELL • (Mat 25:46) "And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." • (Luke 16:22-23) "So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. {23} "And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
