  1. Welcome to the Sunnyside Church of Christ. ~~~~~~~~~~~ May 2, 2010 ~~~~~~~~~~~ Our topic: The Old Rugged Cross ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At Sunnyside Church of Christ, we use the BIBLE to guide our religious services. Please open your BIBLE and follow along with this lesson. If you have questions, please ask at the end of our service.

  2. Material for this sermon… I would like to thank Shawn Daniels from the Pana, Illinois’ Church of CHRIST. His work in assembling the material that was used for this sermon was excellent. The “Old Rugged Cross” has special significance to me. My grandmother used to sing it with me when I stayed with her (weekends) as I was growing up.

  3. Spiritual Songs Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

  4. The Old Rugged Cross Please open your hymnbook to number 536.

  5. The Old Rugged Cross Verse 1: On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suff'ring and shame; And I love that old cross where the dearest and best For a world of lost sinners was slain. ~~~~ Most people don't realize how horrific that death on the cross was. It’s design was simple, but it was one of the cruelest forms of death ever devised.

  6. Death on the Cross John 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him. ***** Scourging was normal for those condemned to death: --->They were stripped and the hands were tied to an upright post. ---> Scourging weakened the victim to a point just short of death. --->The soldier repeatedly hit the victim's backside with the full force of a whip. --->This whip was short having many single (or braided) leather strips with small sharp sheep bones & iron balls tied at intervals. --->Contusions from the iron balls and lacerations from the leather strips and sheep bones exposed the skeletal muscles.

  7. It was prophesied Psalm 22:16 (NIV) Dogs have surrounded me; a band of evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my hands and my feet. ~~~ This writing was about 300 BC. It describes CHRIST’S death on the cross.

  8. It was prophesied Isaiah 52:14 (NIV) Just as there were many who were appalled at him his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness ~~~ This writing was 700 years prior to the birth of CHRIST. Yet it describes what happened to CHRIST very clearly.

  9. Roman Crucifixion --> They took tapered iron spikes approximately 5 to 7 inches long and drove them through his wrists (hands). --> They took His feet and placed one on top of the other and drove a spike through both on the upright post. --> Placed in such a position that one has extreme trouble in breathing, especially in exhalation. --> Mocked by the religious leaders and those around him.

  10. CHRIST on the Cross Matt 27:39-43 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

  11. CHRIST on the Cross Matt 27:28-31 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. Matthew 26:56 But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

  12. Spiritual Agony Luke 23:44-45 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. ~~~ --> TIME- noon to 3pm --> This could not be a solar eclipse. Each Jewish month started on the new moon and the Passover is on the 14th day of the month. This was the time of a full moon (when the moon is on the wrong side of the earth).

  13. Spiritual Agony 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

  14. Spiritual Agony Matthew 27:45-46 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? --> By accepting our sins at the cross Jesus was separated from God.

  15. The Old Rugged Cross Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. **** Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. ****

  16. The Old Rugged Cross Second Verse: O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world, Has a wondrous attraction for me; For the dear lamb of God left His glory above to bear it to dark Calvary Third Verse: In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, A wondrous beauty I see; For twas on that old cross, Jesus suffered and died, To pardon and sanctify me.
