  1. Welcome to the Sunnyside Church of Christ. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~

  2. Welcome to the Sunnyside Church of Christ. ~~~~~~ August 8, 2010 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our topic: “The church of Christ”. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At the Sunnyside Church of Christ, we follow what is found in the Bible. If you have questions, please ask at the end of our service. Feel free to open your own Bibleand follow along with this lesson.

  3. Where did we come from?

  4. The church of Christ in America The Church of Christ (in America) began because people wanted to return to the Bible and find their religious authority in it. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Alexander Campbell (1788-1866) was born in Northern Ireland. He was the son of Thomas Campbell, a Presbyterian minister. ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ In 1809 they moved to Bethany, WV. They were involved with a movement among the Presbyterians. Alexander was invited to preach at several Baptist churches.

  5. Alexander Campbell’s work: He advocated changes to restore Biblical Christianity: The office of "pastor" is not biblical. Creeds of the Protestant churches need to be abolished. The Bible should be used to distinguish truth from error. He made a distinction between the Old & New Testament. The New Testament should be used to establish doctrine and practices of the church. ~~~ Most of his followers had been Baptists, Methodists, or Presbyterians.

  6. Barton Stone’s work: Barton W. Stone was a Presbyterian minister working in Illinois. He rejected the Calvinism of that time. In 1804, he and some other Presbyterian ministers left to become “Christians only”. He established the Christian Church in Western Kentucky.

  7. Christian Church & Disciples of Christ The Christian church members knew very little about Campbell’s Reformers. Campbell’s group immersed thousands as they moved across the frontier. Campbell’s Reformers called themselves Disciples of Christ or Churches of Christ. At that time the two groups began to make contact with each other. In some towns they both had congregations.

  8. Christian Church & Disciples of Christ Barton Stone and John T. Johnson assembled the first “unity meeting” in Georgetown. For four days (during the Christmas holidays,1831) the members met and resolved to become one people together in the Lord. Over the New Year’s weekend, a larger gathering was held in Lexington, and they began the New Year (1832) as a group to unite the Christians. When they merged the two groups: 1 Baptism was not controversial. All the churches were a cappella. They wanted to end denominationalism and use the New Testament to find unity. The leaders insisted on congregational autonomy. They maintained fellowship with other congregations.

  9. According to God, who does the church belong to?

  10. The church belongs to Christ. The church of Christ began at Pentecost (Acts 2:37-47). Jesus said, “I will build my church”. (Matthew 16:18) ~~ ~~ ~~ Acts 4:10-12 says, Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

  11. Church of Christ beginnings The church is named in Romans 16:16 where Paul wrote, “The churches of Christ salute you.” ~~ ~~ ~~ Colossians 3:17 says, And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. ~~ ~~ ~~ 2 Timothy 3:16-17, All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works. ~~ ~~ ~~ What is found in the worship service should be found in the first century church writings of the Bible. Lets take a look…

  12. Attendance is not optional Hebrews 10:25-26 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins. ~~ ~~ ~~ Jesussaidin Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

  13. The Bible tells us toteach Christ said in Matthew 28:19, Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. ~~~ Paultaught in the churches according to 1 Corinthians 4:17.

  14. The Bible tells us to teach and preach We are told in 2 Timothy 2:2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. ~~~ In Acts 10:39-42 we are told, And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

  15. PRAY The Apostle Paul wrote, “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” (Colossians 1:9). ~~~ We are told in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

  16. The First Century Christians sang We are told in Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. ~~~ Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

  17. What else are we told? ~~~ The Lord’s Supper was implemented in Matthew 26:26-28 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. ~~~ Acts 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.

  18. What else are we told? 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
