  1. Allergic reaction • Is an immune response to a harmless substance

  2. Example of substances • Seafood • Eggs • Peanuts • Wheat

  3. Antigens triggers the allergy • Reaction occurs when the antigens(proteins) on the cell surface of these foods triggers: The immune system

  4. Antigens are specific Walnut • All substances have different shape proteins explaining why you are allergic to some foods and not others Peanut

  5. Symptoms of allergies • Sneezing • Runny nose • Rash • Swelling

  6. Histamines • Allergy occurs when the immune system releases histamines. • If the throat swells the patient can die

  7. Treatments • Patient can reduce the effects of the allergic reaction by taking: Antihistamines

  8. Summary Allergic reactions result from over activity of the immune system. The body responds inappropriately to common substances such as dust, mold, pollen, or certain foods. The immune system begins antibodies to these substances, which under normal conditions would not stimulate the immune system. These antibodies cause cells in the body to release substances, including histamines, which cause many allergic symptoms, such as extra fluid in the nasal pathways, difficulty breathing, or inflammation (hives). Allergies are often treated with antihistamines, drugs that stop the release of histamine. Some severe allergic reactions may be life threatening. These reactions may need other types of medications.

  9. Quick Check Allergic reactions are most closely associated with 1.the action of circulating hormones 2.a low blood sugar level 3.immune responses to usually harmless substances 4.the shape of red blood cells
