  2. Summary of Hispanic Heritage Month Hispanic heritage month is held between September and October 15. it honors the anniversary of the independence of five Latin countries; Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Throughout this month we honor the achievements, history and culture of many Hispanic American citizens from the past and as well as the future. The observation of Hispanic heritage month first started out as a week under the presidency of Lyndon Johnson in 1968. Twenty years later in 1988 the week was expanded in to what we now know as Hispanic heritage month by president Ronald Regan.

  9. Interviewer: LaraibRabeel Interviewee: Mr. Lopez ¿Cómote llamas? Pedro luislopez. Como esta? Muybien. De donteeres? Yo soy de Arecibo, Puerto Rico. What does it mean to be a latino? i remember my childhood in Puerto Rico. I grew up on a farm where We rode horses and got up early in the mornings to take care of the chickens, pigs and ducks. We had to cultivate the land so we would always have corn, beans, coffee and yucca. It was also a big family thing. That’s what comes to mind when I think of being a Latino. Growing up, everybody ate together. Nobody ate unless everybody was home and if you were late you were punished.

  10. What do you personally think are some of the most important contributions Latinos have made towards our society? I think Latin rhythms and dances have a pretty god influence in todays music. Also food. Many companies are making and serving Latin inspired dishes. Also in the scientific field many doctors and Nobel prize winners have been Hispanic. In addition many of my family members either first or second generation are cops, doctors, lawyers, biologists and of course teachers Have you ever faced any type of discrimination due to the fact of your heritage? I grew up with a lot of discrimination living in Chicago, Hispanics were only allowed to walk in certain areas within the Puerto Rican neighborhood. If you would go into the black neighborhood you would get jumped, same with the polish and Italian neighborhoods. When I came to Jersey City the racism was far less but there was still some in existence. I faced it from students and parents who thought I was unable to teach due to me being Puerto Rican. I was also the only Spanish engineer in the aerospace industry. The supervisor didn’t understand ho to talk o me because he didn’t expect ne to be an engineer. As a child did you ever feel different from other kids because of your heritage? i never really felt different from others because if I ever stood with Mexicans or other Hispanic people I felt normal. I think New York, New Jersey and Connecticut is a mecca for Hispanics because no one cares where you come from.

  11. Who are some famous or not so famous Latinos you admire for their achievements? Why? I admire Roberto Montalban. He acted in Fantasy Island as Con. His character was perfect. He treated everyone with respect. Someone not so famous who I admire is my grandfather. I stayed with him In Puerto Rico when my parents left for New York. He taught me responsibility and respect. He also taught me to do my chores. He was a hard worker all his life. He would do twelve to fourteen hour shifts to provide food for myself and my grandmother.
