  2. Why is it celebrated September 15th-October 15th? Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

  3. What do we do during this month? During this month, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

  4. When did we start this celebration? In 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration (Sept. 15-Oct. 15).

  5. Famous Hispanic People 1. Helen Ochoa was also the world's first Hispanic female astronaut.

  6. César Chavez A Mexican-American who co-founded the United Farm Workers Union to make sure all workers were paid equally and treated fairly.

  7. Roberto Clemente (1934-1972)Pittsburgh Pirates The first Hispanic baseball player to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Compiled 3,000 hits but was regarded even more highly as perhaps the greatest defensive outfielder in history.
