  3. The Nucleus • A nuclear membrane surround the nucleus. • Chromosomes are found in the nucleus. • Chromosomes are usually in the form of chromatin. • Chromatin contains genetic information. • Chromatin is composed of DNA Main Menu

  4. Ribosomes • The main function of ribosomes is to make proteins. • Proteins are composed of Amino Acids. • These structures compose 25% of the cell’s mass. Main Menu

Endoplasmic Reticulum • The Endoplasmic reticulum has three main functions that include: synthesizing lipids, detoxifying drugs and poisons, and metabolizing carbohydrates. • The ER may be either Rough or Smooth. • The Rough ER has ribosomes embedded on the surface. • The Smooth ER lacks ribosomes.   6. Golgi Apparatus • The Golgi Apparatus modifies, sorts, and packages proteins. • The structure is composed of numerous layers forming a sac-like structure. • These flattened sacs are known as cisternae. Main Menu

  7. Lysosomes • Lysosomes are membrane bound organelles. • They are known for digesting proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. • These structures also transport undigested material to cell membrane for removal. • This process is known as exocytosis. Main Menu

  8. Mitochondria • The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. • It is important for ATP production as well as energy production. • This organelle has a double-layer outer membrane with inner folds called cristae. Main Menu

  9. Plasma membrane • The plasma membrane consists of the outer membrane that controls cellular traffic. • This layer contains proteins that span throughout the membrane. • These proteins are surrounded by a phospholipid bilayer. Main Menu

  10. Centrioles • Centrioles are cylindrical organelles located near the nucleus. • They are composed of nine tubes made of a protein fiber called microtubule. • These structures are important in cellular division. Main Menu
