Fast Facts • He was born in 1480 in Portugal • He was educated at the Court of Portugal where he learned astronomy and the nautical sciences in the navigational school that had been established under Prince Henry. He was probably under the tutelage of the great teacher Martin Behaim. • He had 2 children who died at a young age--Rodrigo de Magalhães[9] and Carlos de Magalhães • He is the first to sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean • He is credited with being the first to circumnavigate the world • He was able to trade in the Spice Islands

  5. Magellan’s Impact on theWorld • He established Spanish dominance in the Phillipines. He also helped establish Spanish claims to Argentina. He helped Spain become richer due to the new “Spice” trade route he was able to establish which broke Portugal’s monopoly on this trade. • The Magellan Straits (the path that he established to cross from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean) was named after him.
