  1. Lessons Learned from a Canada-Africa Collaboration: Building Community Capacity on New Prevention Technologies • Shayna Buhler, Lesley Abraham and Nicci Stein, Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development, Canada; • Aisha Adaranijo ,OlayideAkanni, AugustinaAmuamuziam, Morenike Ukpong and Florita Durueke, New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society, Nigeria; • Bright Phiri, Flanny Chiganze and Malebo Sesane , Southern African AIDS Trust, South Africa; Marc-André LeBlanc, Canada; San Patten, San Patten & Associates, Canada PROJECT SUMMARY: With support from the Canadian HIV Vaccines Initiative (CHVI), from 2009-2011 the Interagency Coalition on AIDS and Development (ICAD) worked in partner-ship with the Southern African AIDS Trust (SAT) and the New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS) to develop a toolkit and training package on HIV prevention research, and to deliver ‘Beyond the Scoop’ training workshops to community representatives and media/ journalists in Canada, Nigeria and Southern Africa. BACKGROUND: “North-South collaboration” and “South-South collaboration” are key phrases often used in the research world. However, these concepts and the practicality of their implementation is not well defined within the community of civil society organisations (CSOs) working in the new HIV prevention technologies (NPT) field, and successful models for these partnerships have not yet been established. SUMMARY OF LESSONS LEARNED • DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSONS LEARNED TOOLKIT: • At project wrap-up, the partners jointly developed a “lessons learned” toolkit . This toolkit was developed with input from all partners, collected primarily at a debrief meeting of representatives from ICAD staff, SAT, NHVMAS, and the Canadian consultants, and through a review of meeting minutes and materials developed over the course of the project. • PURPOSE OF THE TOOLKIT: • To document key observations about the partnership, its success and challenges • To assist Canadian organizations working with international partners to effectively engage in their work CONCLUSIONS: Long-term collaboration amongst CSOs working in the field of NPT research is feasible and necessary. The success and sustainability of such partnerships beyond the lifetime of the immediate project is best facilitated when projects are jointly designed and flexible enough to adapt to the different needs of partners. The toolkit developed through this project can provide a roadmap for other organizations undertaking similar work. ‘Beyond the Scoop’ training materials and the ‘Lessons Learned Toolkit’ are available at www.icad-cisd.com
