  5. Hero of the Week • Your child will be chosen during the year as our Hull Hero. This is a way for us to learn about your child as well as make him/her feel special. • The poster will come home the Friday before he/she is to be hero. We will also send home an estimation jar that you are to fill and bring back the following week along with the completed poster. • Each child will be writing a letter to our Hero telling him/her how special we think he is.

  6. Homework • Homework folder - return to school each day • Purpose is to reinforce skills • Have an organized work space • Consistent schedule • Spend approximately 30 minutes a night • Reading Log (signed weekly) • Math fact practice (sign log) -xtramath.org

  7. Grades • Progress Reports • Report Cards • Letter Grades  • Spot Check • Frequent informal quizzes • Graded work home on Mondays

  8. Curriculum Language Arts (Common Core) Reading- New Journey’s Reading Adoption • Phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension • Small group instruction • Daily 5 Reading Groups • Literature Studies to include… - The Storm - The Stories Julian Tells - Jake Drake: Know-It-All

  9. Curriculum Writing • Daily 5 “Work on Writing” • Grammar • Cursive • Daily 5 “Word Work” • Spelling • Journey’s (Imbedded within the stories) • Weekly spelling tests

Curriculum Math (Some Common Core) Learning Objectives • Conceptual understanding of operations • Memorize math facts (addition, subtraction and multiplication)-focus on this at home!!!! • Rounding numbers • Place Value (up to hundred thousands place) • Money • Fractions • Strategies for estimation • Time, money, measurement • Geometry (3D shapes, transformation of shapes) • Problem Solving (real world math)

  11. Curriculum Science • Scientific Method, Ecosystems, Rocks, Plants, Sound, Light, Earth Science, Health Social Studies • American History (explorers, using timelines, Civil War, postwar, contemporary US), World History, Government (3 branches, 3 levels, foundations of), Civics, Geography

  12. Curriculum Technology • Computer lab • Gain knowledge about technology • Develop skills to use the technology • Apply and interact with technology • Student computer work stations • Conduct research • Learning games • Word processing

  14. Tax Credit • Field Trips • Kartchner Caverns (more info on next slide), Guest Speakers, Museums • Up to $400 (married) • Up to $250 (single) • Get all the money back at tax time!
