  3. SpecialsSchedule Our classroom newsletter will always list the special for each day of the week. Specials Schedule:A- Technology/ Counseling B- Writing C- PE D- Music E- Art F-Media G- PE

  4. 50 or less minutes for 5th grade Vocabulary daily lesson Math Workbook Projects should be done in small steps, a little each day SS/Science on occasion (no more than 10 minutes) 20 minutes of nightly reading Homework Expectations

  5. Classroom Rules • I will be prepared for class. • I will treat others as I want to be treated. • I will ask 3 first, then the teacher. • I follow directions the first time I hear them. • I will always try my best.

  6. Grading • Tests/Projects/Performance Assessment • Weekly Cold Reads (Every Tuesday), Quarterly pre/post tests in ELA and Math. • Class work- Class debates, Simulations, Projects, Problem Solving, Group Work • Homework- incomplete homework counts towards a conduct grade. Excessive zeros in this area will yield an D in conduct. • *Please see conduct record copy on your child’s desk. These should be stapled to the inside cover of their agenda.

  7. Summative Assessment Re-tests • Students will be allowed ONE retest for each assessment in reading and math. • The purpose of allowing a retest is to ensure mastery of standards. • Middle School uses number of retakes total from 5th grade year in consideration for class placement.

  8. Retake Invite You are invited! Based on your child’s performance on this assessment he/she is being offered a retake opportunity. The retest will be given on _______________________________ Before your child is able to take the retest, he/she must complete all the items on the Re-Take Checklist and attach to this document. RSVP _____I accept this invitation, as I desire for my child to retake this assessment. ____ I will decline this invitation, as I do not want my child to re-take this assessment. ___________________Parent Signature

  11. Standardized Testing- • CRCT Testing: A state standardized test that assesses mastery of the 5th grade curriculum. Students must pass the reading and math sections in order to be promoted to 6th grade • Georgia Writing Assessment:An evaluation of each student’s response to an assigned prompt from a bank representing three genres: narrative, informational, and persuasive. Students are allowed approximately 120 minutes to write their essays.

  12. Project Based Instruction • Rubrics and Checklists: • Rubric-quantitative matrix of assessment • Checklist-the “kid friendly” version of the rubric • Contracts: For those who have mastered the skills and can go deeper into the standards with an “extension” activity.

  17. Writing Workshop The daily Writing Workshop consists of: 1. Mini Lesson (about 20 minutes) 2. Focus on a genre-Narrative, Persuasive/Opinion, Informational, and Response to Literature. 3.The Writing Process: Drafting, editing, revising, publishing 4. Individualized writing conferences and goals
