  4. Responsive Classroom Approach • A clear social curriculum can help build a classroom or school into a learning community where high social and academic goals are both attained. • We strive to develop and strengthen social skills, such as Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy and Self-control.

  20. Mathematics Our school district uses a standards-based program: Everyday Math. -

  21. Everyday Mathematics is . . . • A comprehensive Pre-K through 6th grade mathematics curriculum. • Rigorous and balanced. • Consistent with how children actually learn mathematics: it builds on understanding over a period of time, first through informal exposure and then through more formal and directed instruction.

  22. The “Spiral” Philosophy • Mathematical content is taught in a repeated fashion, beginning with concrete experiences. Children using EM are expected to master a variety of mathematical skills and concepts, but not the first time they are encountered. • Children need to revisit topics, concepts, and skills and then relate them to each other in new and different ways.

  23. In first grade, the following are emphasized: • Investigating whole numbers (counting, reading and writing numbers). • Understanding addition and subtraction facts.

  24. Exploring Data • Measurement

  25. Geometry • Patterns and Relationships

  26. What Does Math Time Look Like? • Math Meeting • Mini-Lesson • Math Stations—small groups rotate through structured games and activities related to lesson. One of the stations is teacher-led.

  27. Science Topics • All About Me • Life Cycles—Animals and Chicks • Magnets • Sky and Weather • Solids and Liquids

  28. Other Themes… • More life cycles: apples, pumpkins, penguins • Building Community: • First Six Weeks of School • All about Me • Friendship • Fire Safety • We are Thankful • Holidays Around the World • Animals in Winter • Seasons

  29. Technology Through in-class and computer lab explorations, first graders will: • Identify basic computer parts • Navigate with a mouse • Recognize and use keys

  30. Technology (continued . . .) • Students will also use paint tools to create a picture. • Their knowledge of word processing is further developed by learning how to enter, select and delete text.
