  3. Required Core • Area A: English Composition (2 courses) • Area B: Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning (1 course) • Area C: Life and Physical Science (1 course) LM OAA 4/29/13

  4. Flexible Core (6 courses) • Area A: World Cultures and Global Issues • Area B: US Experience in its Diversity • Area C: Creative Expression • Area D: Individual and Society • Area E: Scientific World • Area A-E: One course from any of the Areas above LM OAA 4/29/13

What can students take? • A student must take one course from each of the Required and Flexible Areas (Required A is 2 courses). • A student can take any course in a Core Area as long as he or she has the prerequisite. • Some programs restrict which courses can be taken in the Flexible Core. • Students cannot take more than two courses in any one discipline in the Flexible Core.   6. Why is this being done? B.I.14 - RESOLUTION ON CREATING AN EFFICIENT TRANSFER SYSTEM “The City University of New York experiences large student transfer flows among all of its undergraduate colleges. To enhance transfer students’ progress toward degree completion, CUNY must insure that students’ credits earned from any CUNY college transfer smoothly and efficiently to all other CUNY colleges. …” http://www.cuny.edu/academics/initiatives/pathways/about/policies.html LM OAA 4/29/13

  7. Who is impacted? • All incoming students in Summer and Fall 2013 • Students who are readmitted for Fall 2013 after more than one semester of absence • Continuing students may opt in to the new programs after consulting with an advisor LM OAA 4/29/13

What has been done so far? • 112 courses have been approved for inclusion in the Common Core • All A.S. programs have been modified to conform to Pathways • A.A. programs are being revised to include the 30 credit Common Core • A.A.S. programs are being revised to include 20-30 credits of Common Core courses LM OAA 4/29/13

What has been done so far? • A.S. programs have obtained waivers to require courses to fulfill some Core Areas: • Business Administration A.S. • Liberal Arts and Science A.S. • Therapeutic Recreation A.S. • Community School Health A.S. • Dietetics and Nutrition A.S. • Computer Science A.S. • Mathematics A.S. • Engineering Science A.S. What happens when students transfer? • Senior Colleges have an additional 6-12 credit College Option requirement • Associate degree graduates will be required to complete 6 credits after transfer • Transfers with more than 30 credits will be required to complete 9 credits after transfer plus whatever Common Core requirements that they have not completed • Transfers with less than 30 credits will be required to complete 12 credits after transfer plus whatever Common Core requirements that they have not completed • Students that transfer into CUNY colleges with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution will be exempted from the Common Core.   11. STEM Variant courses • Courses to be included in Common Core are 3 hours, 3 credits. There are some approved exceptions. • Some courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines with more than 3 hours and/or credits can be used to fulfill Common Core requirements to facilitate transfer in some majors. These are STEM variant courses. • Students can select a STEM variant course to fulfill a Common Core requirement. LM OAA 4/29/13

Course changes for inclusion in Common Core Modern Language courses: FRN 111, FRN 112, FRN 22, ITL 111, ITL 112, ITL 22, ITL 23, POR 111, POR 112, SPN 111, SPN 112, SPN 21, SPN 22, SPN 25, SPN 30, SPN 31 • Courses which have been reduced from 4 credits to 3 credits have 3 digit number, e.g., FRN 11  FRN 111 • 4th hour remains in schedule for 111 and 112 level courses Other courses changed pre and co-requisites ALL CHANGES WILL BE PUBLISHED IN ADDENDUM OF ONLINE CATALOG LM OAA 4/29/13

If and when to opt in? • Consult with advisor • Should wait until Fall semester when program changes are published • Should be based on which option leads to completion earlier • Use what-if feature in DegreeWorks • Student must sign a form to opt in so degree requirements are changed in registration records. Recommendations for students with • 0-15 credits: Opt-in to revised programs with Pathways Common Core • 16-30 credits: Consult with an advisor to evaluate whether to remain in current program or opt in to revised program. • 30 more credits: Remain in current program. • Consult with advisor LM OAA 4/29/13
