  3. Stage 2 • 20 min • Body temp & heart rate drops • Rapid brain activity

  4. Stage 3 • Deep, slow brain waves • Transitioning to very deep sleep

  5. Stage 4 • Very deep sleep • 30 min • Sleepwalking & bedwetting most likely to occur at this stage

  6. Stage 5 • Dreaming • REM – Rapid Eye Movement • Increased brain activity, relaxed muscles • 90 min after falling asleep

  7. Cycling through the Stages • Sleep does not progress through stages in sequence. • May start out 1,2,3,4, then repeat 3 & 2 before REM sleep. • When REM is over, the body returns to stage 2. • We cycle through the stages 4 to 5 times per night.
