  2. Building the Nuclear Island • National HE STEM Programme • £95k for Programme Development • Regional HE/FE partners • Programme Manager • Pilot phase to deliver student curriculum pack, design for Nuclear Island Civil Part, employer engagement pack and CPD package for employers and HE/FE staff • Wider STEM curriculum development (e.g. Mech, Elec, Chem, Physics packages) • HE Funding Changes: HE white paper • Engagement with BIS on high cost strategic courses • Good practice sector approach to development and delivery • Student Fees • Impact of reduced course support for high cost subjects • Employability impact www.cogent-ssc.com/Higher_level_skills/ni_index.php Image from Westinghouse

  3. Building the Nuclear Island • Employers invited to participate • Initial Set Up Costs • £80k • Typical Operating Costs • £10k per week • Resources • Participation Requirements • Staff time • Are you willing • Individual versus community www.cogent-ssc.com/Higher_level_skills/ni_index.php Image from Westinghouse

  4. Building the Nuclear Island • HE Free Offer • Phase 2 programme : Imperial’s teaching pack for HE/FE partners, piloted in June 2011. Regional HE/FE partners to provide complementary packages on nuclear education. • Package available to HE/FE ‘free of development costs’ • Phase 2 team will help identify employer partnerships • HE Costs/Benefits HE/FE pay own stafftime and consumables of ‘field trip HE/FE gains CPD for technicians, PhD students, education staff Alumni benefit: alumni/industry volunteers gain intense site CPD • Student Costs • “Constructionarium Ltd Fee” per student of £150 (enables site) • Accommodation + food: £250 @ £50 per night (can be less) • Transport (Coach travel: eg London-Norfolk £1800 plus van hire) www.cogent-ssc.com/Higher_level_skills/ni_index.php Image from Westinghouse

  5. Building the Nuclear Island • Can we help support Student Costs? • Individual Support • Scholarships • Benefits and Disadvantages • Community practice such as with community apprenticeship programme • Can we support a similar approach? • Benefits and Disadvantages • How would we identify the students? • Through application scheme • HE and Employer Interview www.cogent-ssc.com/Higher_level_skills/ni_index.php Image from Westinghouse

  7. Funding Workshop: Capital Costs • Before the pilot project can be undertaken at Bircham Newton a detailed design, development drawings and project packs have to be originated. Some testing and modelling have to be worked through to ensure the project is safe to build. Next some preparation of the site has to be made. Finally materials will need to be obtained. • A breakdown of these costs is as follows:- • Design Package 25,000 • Permanent Works at Bircham 25,000 • Materials 10,000 • Disposal of Waste and Demolition 2,500 • Plant Operatives 1,000 • Plant and Small Tools 5,000 • Contractor 6,000 • Contingency 6,500 80,000 • The permanent works at Bircham Newton include the development of a lined lagoon, fencing to ensure that elementary nuclear site safety and behavioural procedures are followed and a preparation area. The materials cost includes concrete, reinforcement, formwork and pipework. The students are not permitted to handle large plant on site and hence the need for plant operatives to undertake lifting etc. www.cogent-ssc.com/Higher_level_skills/ni_index.php Image from Westinghouse

  8. Funding Workshop: Costs • Industry • Who? • When by? • How do we facilitate this? • Regional HE/FE Partners • NW = Manchester • London and SE = Imperial • Central = Birmingham • North East = ? • South West = Bridgwater + HE Partner? • Wales = ? www.cogent-ssc.com/Higher_level_skills/ni_index.php Image from Westinghouse
