    1. Joule Island

    2. Background information Joule island is a remote island in the Pacific Ocean You are part of a team of 30 scientists who will be staying on the island for 3 years to study it As the resident energy specialist you will need to provide all the that the team will require.

    3. Island information There are no fossil fuels on the island and it is 500 km to the mainland. The island has sunny days but cold nights. the wind blows most days, but not in summer. The hot springs are at a temperature of 80 °C.

    4. Your task List the renewable and non-renewable energy resources on the island. The team will be living in 2 huts, how could you heat those huts? Explain how you will provide the team with hot water for washing Energy to cook food How will you be able to supply electricity to keep the refrigerator working (to keep medicines cold)

    5. Further work On your picture of the island show where you would build the huts, where you would build any energy installations and show how the energy will be transferred to the huts. In the summer the water tends to dry up, how will this affect your plans? Design a way to get over this. For some experiments your team will need gas for a Bunsen burner. Explain in as much detail as you can how you can provide this.
