  1. Assignment 4 – Using Tools to Obtain Existing Graphics Sharon Sain ssain@vt.edu November 12, 2001

  2. Using PowerPoint to Construct an Autobiographical Timeline Need description: Student will use PowerPoint to develop an autobiographical presentation. The student will experiment with various text fonts, styles, and sizes. Explanation of graphics use: The sample graphics give the student opportunity to view text in various ways. This allows the student to visualize the text formats which best complement the subject, theme, or background.

  3. Graphic for Autobiographical Timeline • Examples of fonts, styles, and sizes. • Date of Birth: August 29, 1990(Ariel font, 24pt) • Date of Birth: August 29, 1990(Cooper Black Bold font, 40pt) • Date of Birth: August 29, 1990(French Script MT, 32 pt)

  4. Scanning and Saving a Photo Need description: The student will use a desktop scanner to convert a photograph into a digital image and save that image in a compatible format such as a bitmap or jpeg file. Explanation of graphics use: The graphic demonstrates for the student the end product when the student selects a personal photo to be scanned. The student can experiment with various photo sizes and editing options to determine the best photo view possible.

  6. Editing a Graphic Downloaded from the World Wide Web • Need Description: After the student searches the WWW and selects a graphic appropriate for his or her autobiographical presentation, the image will be downloaded and then edited for insertion into PowerPoint. • Explanation of graphics use: A “before” and “after” graphic would best demonstrate the editing of a downloaded graphic. The student can view the image as it was saved in its original form and then in its Paint Shop Pro version. In this example, the image is edited to include borders and color.

  8. Inserting a Table into a Text Document Need Description: Science students conduct an experiment, collect data, and then display results in a table within a Word document. The inserted table should be formatted in correctly sized columns and rows. Explanation for graphics use: The graphic will show how certain types of text are better organized via table format. A table format is often more easily read and interpreted than phrase or sentence form.

  9. Graphic for Table Insertion Data results in standard text form Experiment: Comparing measuring units Can of beans weighs 10.5 oz and 297 grams A 10,000 turkey weighs 352.79 ounces A 29.98 ounce box of cake mix weighs 850 grams A one gram piece of candy weighs .035 ounces Table on next slide

  11. Selecting A Background Theme for a Web Page Design Need Description: Selecting from choices found in a Web editor such as FrontPage or free background downloads via the WWW, the student chooses a theme relevant to the subject of the web site that he or she is designing. Explanation for graphics use: These examples show a variety of background colors and textures. After viewing different choices, the student can compare and contrast the qualities of the backgrounds to determine factors such as text and background compatibility, color contrasts, or other esthetics.
