  1. HBD Plans for run-6 Itzhak Tserruya DC meeting, BNL, October 12, 2005 • HBD status • Plans for run 6 • ( Back-up: details presented in Upgrades meeting yesterday)

  2. HBD global schedule

  3. HBD plans for Run 6 • We plan to test the HBD in run-6. • The best would be to test it first with p+p collisions and then with Au+Au. But if run-6 starts with Au beams then we will reverse the order. In that case the plan is to install the HBD toward the end of the Au+Au period, in April 2006. • From our present assessment, we should have ** at least ** one of the two HBD boxes partially instrumented. The precise configuration will depend on the availability of readout electronics: • - minimum configuration: one box with one detector module • - maximum configuration: one box fully instrumented

  4. Back-up (As presented at the Upgrades meeting yesterday) • Full-scale Prototype status • Safety Review • Detector box construction • GEM production • Stony Brook test and assembly facility • Gas system • Analog electronics • Digital electronics

  5. Full scale prototype status • Gas tightness test at WI: leak rate 2.3 cc/min ~4 ppm of water (2 ppm from gas pipes) • Triple GEM detector installed and tested inside the prototype in CF4 with Fe55 source. • Shipped to BNL: leak during transport? leak rate now ~20 cc/min • Plans: • Install readout board on back of prototype • Install preamps (old design) and do electrical tests to study signals with • test pulse, noise, etc. • Prepare and install a CsI photocathode into the detector • Test GEMs with Fe-55 and UV-lamp

  6. HBD Safety Review • Took place on September 15 • No major issues. • Additional documentation requested for: • - HV PS • - signal cables (appropriate flame and cable tray ratings) • - aramid honeycomb is the same as nomex • - SHV connectors • Provide plan to limit the HV PS to 5KV

  7. HBD construction status • All raw materials (FR4 sheets, honeycomb, HV resistors, HV connectors) ordered and most of them in house • Detector box design fully completed • Jig design underway • Small parts (insert, pins, screws, HV holders..) in the shops • Detector construction to start Nov. 1st • PCB design almost complete • Detailed construction schedule foresees shipment of boxes to SUNY in January 2006.

  8. PCB design • Constraint on maximum number of pads: 1152 pads per arm or 192 pads per panel • Would be much easier to have a round number like 1200 pads per arm or 200 pads per panel  not possible • We found a solution in which each panel has 192 pads and yet all six panels are identical.

  9. GEM production • GEM final order placed: • - no changes wrt to pilot production • - 65 standard GEMs • - 35 Au plated GEMs • - 100 frames • First batch (app. 1/3 of the total) • - 20 standard + 10 Au plated + 30 frames • completed at CERN and shipped to WI. • Gluing to frame, mounting HV resistors, and test of triple GEM modules with Fe-55 ready to start at WI • First shipment of tested triple GEM modules to SUNY in 2nd half of November. Last shipment in mid-February 2006

  10. SB assembly and test facility status • Clean tent ready • new filters/light in • services (3-phase power, water, valve pressure) ready • Glove box specifications defined • bid process started a few weeks ago • Glove box and evaporator from Jeff Lab are being moved to SB.

  11. GLOVE BOX Specifications • Type: Dry Nitrogen Glove Box – • H2O <10pmm, • Particle Level <100/m3 , • Dehumidification Column with HEPA filtration, • Monitoring Instruments H2O, O2, Pressure • Pressure Range +- 10milbar, • N2, leakage 0.05%vol/h, • N2 Flow +250 l/Hr N2 From Boil off From Liquid N2, with Backup Cylinders Automatically engaged • Overpressure Vent, 4 Swagelock Fittings on each end to control gas Flow According to work. • Size (Interior): length 3m min., width 1.2m max., height 1.3m min. • 3 working sections Storage [Middle] Gem Working area [Next to airlock] HBD Assembly [Hatch] • Air lock[or Transfer Chamber] • 46 cm to 60cm Dia., GEM Shipping Box, and CsI Deposition Transfer Case can Pass Thru. • Maybe Pumpable, if not then a Pump Through System maybe used] • Fitted with N2 Feed, Exhaust, KF-40mm Vacuum, and H2O Measurement • Feedthroughs Panels: Located at Box ends and at center position • 120VAC- 2 quad outlet Boxes with Power Strips, • Signal & HV, Gases on replaceable Panels • Gases on replaceable Panels • Lighting:Exterior and Interior Spot lighting • Glove Ports – Sealable, • 8 Pairs of Glove ports, 6 pairs set evenly along the length of the Box, the 7th and 8th set above the 2 pairs next to the hatch, which is were we will assemble the HBD

  12. TH @ Jefferson Lab

  13. HBD Gas System Simplified Single pass system for Run 6 Total detector volume: ~ 626 l (313 l each side) Flow rate: ~ 60 l/hr ( ~ 150 l/hr purge) Extensive gas monitoring to maintain O2 and H2O levels to a few ppm • Gas pipes installed • Most components ordered • or in house Pure CF4 R.Pisani

  14. Gas Monitoring D.Lynch Gas monitoring near detector (under stairs by labyrinth) • H20 • O2 • VUV transmission McPherson 234/302 VUV spectrometer - uses pure argon as reference gas (no vacuum) - completely enclosed 30 W D2 lamp

  15. New Preamp Design • ~ ½ the area of the previous version of the preamp (0.76” x 0.57 “) • Uses small Samtec connector • Uses new op amp with lower bandwidth which is less prone to oscillation  Considerable reduction in radiation length from 1.6% to 0.6%

  16. Schedule for New Preamps • Basic design done by Joe Harder • (while home recuperating from surgery !) • Small prototype order (~ 200 pieces) placed (should take ~ 3 weeks) • Test prototypes for oscillation, noise, etc (~ 1 week) • Final design could be sent out within 1month • New readout board design in parallel • small changes to accommodate the new connectors • should be ready in 3-4 weeks from now

  17. For Clockmaster, clock fanout, ADC and backplane, we either have (or will have in 1-2 days) the blank boards. These boards will be assembled soon. • Optical out – Design is done (not submitted) • New DCM daughter card design is underway. Updated HBD FEM Diagram Crate Backplane (7 blank boards, 4 crates+ 1 spare+ 2 test stands) (7 blank boards, 4 crates+ 1 spare+ 2 test stands) Clock fanout ADC Optical out Test pulse (25 blank boards. We have major of the parts for 5 boards) (4 blank boards, 1 needed + 1 spare+ 2 test stands) Clock Master New Daughter card + DCM GTM/Ethernet C.Y. Chi
