  3. If a loved one is the one to take it, do you have any idea what to say or do?

  4. Most people probably do not know how to deal with this so allow us to explain what a mental health assessment is.

  5. Mental Health Assessment

  6. A mental health assessment is one of the most significant among all the meetings that is done with the mental health professional.

  7. It is an evaluation where the mental health expert will analyzethe person’s needs particularly the level of impairment and the person’s special requirements during the course of a treatment.

  8. It might be similar to your job interview or your first date. It’s the getting-to-know stage.

  9. The main purpose is for the clinician to personally see the person’s needs and to discuss with you and your loved ones the possible treatments that will be done.

  10. Parts of a Medical Health Assessment Meeting

  11. Medical Status Examination or MSE This is used by the clinician to evaluate if there is an urgent requisite to apply psychiatric intervention. A mental health professional initially use his social skills, clinical experiences, eyes and ears to assess the person’s state and level of impairment.

  12. There is also this part where the clinician will check how the person dress himself, eye contact, tone of voice, judgment, orientation and thinking pattern. Professionals perform this to conclude if the person is having suicidal, homicidal or psychosis.

  13. Authorizations and Consents Here is where the individual shares his or her medical history which the mental health professional requires to be able to meet the person’s medication needs. Whoever signs the consent is given the permission to make decisions on the person’s behalf.

  14. Assessment Phase Here is where the clinician evaluates the reason why the person is seeking mental health help. Questions will be given to the person, this includes family, abuse, trauma and social histories. The person will also be asked about his relationships, substance abuse or dependence, medications, criminal history etc.

  15. The Treatment Plan This last phase of the assessment is where the professional and the person draft a course of action, select the treatment needed and layout the goals and expectations during the course of the therapy sessions
