  3. OBJECTIVE After the completion of reading about the six major biomes of the world, and upon successful completion of the interactive learning powerpoint, students should be able to identify, explain, and compare and contrast the six different biomes by giving a 2-3 minute speech on a certain given biome. After completion of the speech, students should be able to get at least an 80% on the quiz proceeding the powerpoint lesson.

  4. AUDIENCE This learning activity is intended for the following learners: • 3rd – 5th graders • Middle-class suburban elementary school community • Children/students who need a visual/hands-on learning activity • Students who are seeking extra credit • Students who do not fully understand the material after the general lesson given in class

  5. ENVIRONMENT This activity should be competed: • individually or in groups up to 3 students • at a computer that allows sound and has access to the internet • in the classroom, at a computer lab, or at home

  8. LET’S LEARN ABOUT BIOMES! Well hey there, explorer! My name is Freddy the Explorer, and I will help guide you through this journey! Yahoo! BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY! FREDDY

  9. What In The World Are Biomes? In the world, there are many different weather patterns, landscapes, animals and plants. All these things contribute to an area’s biome. Today, you will investigate and explore the six major biomes of the world!

  10. What Would You Like To Learn About? OR Start from the beginning! Choose one! tundra taiga rainforest grassland forest desert

  11. THE RAINFOREST ? 2 DID YOU KNOW? different types of rainforests! There are TEMPERATE TROPICAL AND CLICK ON ONE OF THE TYPES TO LEARN MORE! What makes the rainforest so SPECIAL? Watch this to find out! video MAP

  19. TEMPERATE RAINFOREST Found along the coast in the temperate zone Cool fact: 100+ THESE RAINFORESTS GET INCHES OF RAINFALL A YEAR! COOL TEMPERATURES Found on the west coast of the United States from northern California to Alaska. The climate is caused by ocean currents, which bring in rain, fog, and clouds.

  20. TUNDRA HOW COLD IS COLD? Located at the TOP OF THE WORLD around the NORTH POLE BRR! plants animals ‘ MAP

  21. TUNDRA FACTS Animals are adapted to handle cold winters and to breed and raise young quickly in the very short and cool summers. Temperatures during the arctic winter can dip to -60 F! Brrrr! The soil is often frozen. Water is unavailable during most of the year.

  22. WHERE IS THE TUNDRA LOCATED? = tundra

Freddy’s COOL FACTS: • winters are cold, summers are warm • lots of conifers grow here • average temperature is below freezing 6 months out of the year • wildfires can start easily Taiga is the LARGEST biome in the world! 26. WHERE IS THE TAIGA LOCATED?

  27. TAIGA PLANTS Not very many plants grow here. Interesting, huh? conifers cotton grass the harsh conditions make it hard For plant life to survive.

  32. RAINFALL CHART HEY KIDS! Here is a chart to help you look at each biome’s rainfall. Look closely at the DESERT and the TUNDRA, why do they get such little rainfall?

  33. WHERE IS THE DESERT LOCATED?

  34. DESERT PLANTS cactus yucca tree

  35. DESERT ANIMALS addax rattlesnake sidewinder thorny devil

  36. TEMPERATE DECIDIOUS FOREST This biome is home to the four seasons: summer, fall, winter and spring The word "deciduous" means exactly what the leaves on these trees do: change color in autumn, fall off in the winter, and grow back again in the spring. This adaptation helps trees in the forest survive winter. plants animals This is where many of you call HOME! MAP

  37. FOREST PLANTS trees, trees, trees! Here are a few leaves from trees: American beech white oak

  38. FOREST ANIMALS deer coyote

  39. WHY DO THE SEASONS CHANGE? The seasons change because of the tilt on earth’s axis. Without the tilt of the earth's axis, we wouldn't have seasons. Instead, the areas around the equator would receive the most sun and the northern and southern hemispheres would be stuck in a gradual gradient of hot to cold. The seasons would not change, it would be about the same temperature year round and there would be no seasons.

  40. WHERE IS THE TEMPERATE DECIDIOUS FOREST LOCATED? deciduous forest
