  28. U-LINK LIGHT RAIL TUNNELS 4. TUNNEL EXCAVATION – EPB METHOD WHAT DOES EARTH PRESSURE BALANCE MINING MEAN? In basic terms, it means providing tunnel face support, by using excavated material, to prevent over-excavation and surface settlement. The excavated earth in the excavation chamber is used to balance the combined earth and water pressure acting on the face of the tunnel.

  30. U-LINK LIGHT RAIL TUNNELS 4. TUNNEL EXCAVATION – EPB METHOD HOW DO YOU “DO” EPB MINING? • Balance the chamber pressure with the ACTUAL earth and water pressure

  31. U-LINK LIGHT RAIL TUNNELS 4. TUNNEL EXCAVATION – EPB METHOD HOW DO YOU “DO” EPB MINING? • KEEP THE CHAMBER FULL Void space Partially Full Chamber

  33. U-LINK LIGHT RAIL TUNNELS 4. TUNNEL EXCAVATION – EPB METHOD WHERE IS EARTH PRESSURE BALANCE MINING UTILIZED? • SOFT GROUND i.e. SAND, SILT, AND CLAY • BELOW THE GROUNDWATER TABLE • “SPECIAL” GROUND CONDITIONS • IN PLACE OF COMPRESSED AIR TUNNELS
