  1. Types of Reactions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS6JTr-mTWY

  2. There are 6 types of reactions you will learn: • Synthesis • Decomposition • Single Replacement (displacement) • Double Replacement (displacement)

  3. Synthesis: • Two or more reactants combine to produce a new product. • More than one reactant makes ONE product. • Think “making” • A + B  AB 2H2 + O2 2H2O

  4. Decomposition: • A compound breaks down into two or more simpler compounds or elements. • 1 reactant makes more than 2 products • Think “breaking down” • AB  A + B H2CO3(aq)  CO2(g) + H2O(l)

  5. Single Replacement: • One element takes the place of (displaces) another element in a compound. • Think 1 boy goes to dance with a couple and takes the other boy’s girl. • A + BX AX + B 2Na(s) + 2H2O(l)  2NaOH(aq) +H2(g)

  6. Double Displacement • The cations (metals) of two different compounds exchange places, forming two new compounds. • Think “couple switch” • WX + YZ YX + WZ Ba(OH)2 + Na2SO4 BaSO4 + 2NaOH

  7. Exothermic vs. Endothermic: • Exothermic reactions means “exit” • Thermic means “heat” • Heat leaves or GIVES OFF HEAT • Endothermic reactions means “enter” • Thermic means “heat” • Heat enters, so it gets COLD

  8. Practice time! One more time! State the type, predict the products, and balance the following reactions: • BaCl2 + H2SO4 BaSO4 + 2HCl • Zn + CuSO4  ZnSO4 + Cu • Cs + Br2  CsBr2 • FeCO3  FeO + CO2
