  3. Exothermic Reaction • Release energy in the form of heat, light ,or sound • May occur spontaneously and result in higher randomness of entropy of the system • May produce heat or may even be explosive Fe2O3 + 2Al -> 2Fe + Al2O3 + Heat

  4. Endothermic Reaction • They must absorb energy in order to proceed • Can not occur spontaneously • They absorb energy as the temperature drop is measured during the reaction. Ba(OH)2.8H2O (s) + 2 NH4SCN (s) --> Ba(SCN)2 (s) + 10 H2O (l) + 2 NH3 (g)

  5. Synthesis • Two or more simple substances combine to form a more complex substance • As two or more reactance yielding one product is another way to identify a synthesis reaction 2Na + Cl2 --> 2NaCl

  6. Decomposition • This reaction has a more complex substance that breaks down into more simpler parts • Synthesis and decomposition are opposite reaction 2 NaHCO3 --> NaCO3 + H2O + CO2

  7. Single Replacement • Single uncombined element • Two reactants yeild to or more products Zn + 2HCl --> ZnCl2 + H2

  8. Double Replacement • Two compounds switch places to form a new compound. • Two reactants yield two products BaCl2 + Na2SO4 --> BaSO4 + 2NaCl

  9. Combustion • A chemicals that involve oxygen and produces energy( heat) so rapidly that flames are shown. • Is a reaction that includes oxygen dioxide and water. 2Mg + O2 --> 2MgO
