  2. Background Juan Ibáñes has had discussions with several members of ESB on this project and after the SC meeting held in Barcelona has come up with a table of contents for chapters and possible authors for this work, which would make a link between soil scientists and ecologists and bio-geographers.

  3. Objectives • Agree on the idea of ESB sponsoring a book on the subject or not. • Suggest improvements on contents. • Identify authors agree and alternative authors of individual chapters • Establish a timeframe and a work program • Evaluate level of support and if a special ESB Working group is needed.

  4. Introduction • Preface DG ENV • Introduction Editors • Handbook Structure and Rationale Editors • What Are Soils and Soil-scapes W. Blum, J.J. Ibáñes, M. Jamagne, A. Dobos • Soil forming Factors J. Schultz, S. Rivas R. Jongman • Soil classification (WRB) E. Micheli, O.Spaargaren • Soils of the World F. Nachtergaele, R. Dudal, H.Eswaran • Soils of Europe M.
