First Order of BusinessFind your seat! • Be careful not to sit next to someone who will distract you from your work! • Sit next to someone you’ll collaborate and work well with. • Keep in mind, participation counts towards your grade, A LOT! • Take the next 2 minutes to get situated • Let’s get started…..

  4. Now that we’re seated… Prepare yourself for… I’m going to be doing a lot of talking in the coming days

About Me • Lived in Billings for over 20 years • Lived and studied Art in England for a year • Graduated from University of Montana • Art and Art History • Education Manager at Yellowstone Art Museum • Served in the Philippines for the Peace Corps • Master’s in Education at MSUB • Professional Photographer • Studied ceramics under Beth Lo and Archie Bray Foundation.

  7. Syllabus • Lab Fee • $10 • Additional supply such as clay and glazes may cost more based on supply and demand • Please have your parents contact me if this is an issue • Lab fee is due Tuesday, September 3, 2013! • Detention is assigned to those who forget!-Hey, it’s a department rule…sorry.

Syllabus • Absences Time is of the essence in this course, and grades can be GREATLY impacted by absences or tardies. • Not much homework, so class participation is key • Clay can CRACK or DRY while you are away for long periods of time. This will ruin your projects. • Participation points are deducted for unexcused absences • Participation is 30% of your grades, so it will behoove you to be punctual and present.

Syllabus About that 30% of your overall grade… • Seating: • Everyone is expected to be in his or her assigned seat at the beginning bell. • Tardies will be assigned to those who are not. • Clean-UP: • Part of your grade involves cooperation in maintaining an orderly and efficiently clean studio. • Wedging table • Counters • Sinks • Throwing wheels • Tables • Pug mill • Tools • Floor • Whatever I see needs cleaning

Syllabus About that 30% of your overall grade… • Failure to meet the demands of the participation and chore lists result in: • - 10% per occurrence • 3 occurrences result in – 30% • That will bring your grade to a C, even with all A’s on your projects! • Parent will be contacted after the 2nd occurrence and a behavior plan will be instituted by the parent and instructor

  11. Syllabus 60 % of your grade involves your in-class projects • There are 6 projects for Ceramics 1 • 5 projects for Ceramics 2

  12. Syllabus 10 % of your grade involves: • 1 multiple choice mid-term • 1 Art History Research Paper • 1 brief presentation on your research findings • 1 final critique including your best/favorite piece from this semester.

  13. Syllabus Extra Credit??? • 3 possible ways to excel or redeem your grade • 1 Extra project • THIS WILL LIKELY HAPPEN ANYWAY FOR MOST OF YOU • 1 Article research and written review • 1 Gallery attendance and written review Any 3 may be chosen and approved by me

Other Odds and Ends • The key to success in this course is an honest effort ad daily participation. • Students must cooperate with the instructor. • Booth students and instructor have the right to be respected. • Student’s must treat other’s projects as their own. • School policies regarding tardies and electronic devices will be enforced. • Cont…

  15. Other Odds and Ends • Food and Drinks are allowed, but class time to retrieve said items is not allowed. • Also be cautious with what you ingest. This room is dirty! • Students must be in assigned seats by the bell, and must not line up past the black line before the end of class • A tardy will be assigned to violators of this rule. • Do not use tools or machinery without permission. • Cont…

  16. Basic Rules • Listen and follow the instructions the first time • No swearing, put-downs, or inappropriate conversations. • Keep hands, feet, etc., and objects to yourself Consequences • 2 minutes after class • Sent to Dean’s office

  17. Serious Offenses • Do not interrupt instructor. Please be patient and wait your turn. • Stealing or vandalizing another student’s art will result in possibly failing this course and a visit to the dean’s office. • Throwing clay will result in a visit to the deans, a call home, and 3 days of ISS. • Improper use or vandalism to studio equipment will result in permanent removal from this class and a failing grade. • Creation of drug related paraphernalia will result in a call to parents, ISS, and a possible failing grade • Other serious offenses as deemed by the instructor may result in being permanently removed from this course. • Use common sense, relax, and enjoy your time here.
