  2. Before • Review • Israelites descendants of Abraham • 12 tribes of Jacob • Held in slavery in Egypt • Led out of Egypt by Moses • Canaan = Promised Homeland

  3. Before The Promised Land • It took the Israelites 40 years to reach Canaan • Along the way, Moses died and Joshua took over

  4. Before • The Battle of Jericho • Joshua led the people around the city walls for 6 days • On the 7thday the city walls came down • Joshua led the Israelites to 3 more victories in war • The land was divided among the 12 tribes

  5. Before • After Joshua’s death, the people looked to judges for leadership • Judges were usually military leaders of 1-2 tribes • Israelites settled the hilly region, the Canaanites settled the coastal areas • Phoenicians were a group of Canaanites who developed an alphabet
