  2. Empire • When a state (country) extends its boundaries to areas where cultural, social or political views differ. • Usually, states develop empires as a means of expanding military influence.

  3. Colony • A colony is a country (or state) that is under the control of another, more powerful, state. • Colonies are usually used to exploit resources.

  4. Alliances • An alliance is an agreement among multiple states. • Alliances enforce the idea of "strength in numbers". When one alliance member is threatened, the entire alliance is threatened.

  5. Triple Alliance • This was an alliance that was formed among Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy in 1882. It lasted until the start of World War I.

  6. Triple Entente • This was an alliance formed among Great Britain, France and Russia in 1907. • It was formed to counter the Triple Alliance, and the threat that it had created in Europe.
