  1. Mount St. Helens “Vancouver, Vancouver, this is it!”

  2. Our Phenomenon • Mount St. Helens explosive eruption • What have we been trying to answer? • Will this help us understand a broader topic?

  3. Included in our model’s so far…. • What does it look like under the volcano? • Location • Plate boundary • Formation of magma • What from your model do you think is important to include in our understanding the causes of Mt. St Helens being explosive? • This all needs to be put into words

  4. Do we have supporting evidence? • Create a table of the activities from this unit…

  5. Explanation with evidence • If your explanation says that high viscosity leads to an explosive eruption, you also have to explain WHY you know this… • I know this because the viscosity lab showed that……

  6. How do we explain our phenomenon? • Think about what we can see and what cannot be seen that is causing an explosive eruption… • Answer the question: What cause Mt. St. Helens to erupt explosively? • Take some time in your groups to write out an explanation of what is seen in your models • Remember to think back to what our observations and evidence has been during class activities…

  7. Compare and Share • With a different small group, share your explanations. • Be polite with feedback, this is a discussion not a competition or argument • Does the evidence support or contradict your explanation? • Does your explanation match with our observations? • Did you include everything from our list in your explanation?

  8. Writing an Individual Explanation • What ideas did the groups come up with that need to be included in the final explanation? • What evidence supports these ideas? You will now use this whole class list to write an individual explanation. Incorporate specific pieces of evidence collected in class to support your explanation.

  9. Final Explanation • Just like we revised our models, think carefully about what you need to do to revise your explanation. • Include all important factors discussed • Include supporting evidence from activities • Tie it all back to why Mount St. Helens erupted so explosively
