  1. Leprosy By Edward Pintor

  2. Symptoms Leprosy, or Hansen’s Disease, is an inflammation disease found in the nerves on your body. From the nerves, the disease will then move to your flesh. Once the flesh swells up, massive skin loss follows.

  3. Causes Several causes that give leprosy are: 1) Mycobacterium leprae that live in poorly sanitized areas 2) Genes that have been unfortunately passed down from ancestors 3) Transmission between people and animals

  4. Treatments Treatment nowadays is a monthly dose of prescription medicine for 9 months and the inflammation decreases. After the flesh stops swelling, skin would heal eventually.

  5. History This disease has been around since 4000 BC, and has always been very deadly. - When infected, people were taken to quarantine on islands far away from their own families to prevent spread - Once victims were taken, their life expectancy was about 5-20 years left - When cities got word of a nearby spread, soldiers got put on patrol to monitor the flow of people in and out of the city

  6. Current Research Leprosy doesn’t show up here, but in some areas things never changed. Currently: - Victims live mostly in the poor areas of Africa, India, South America, and the Philippines - About 75% of people are either immune or will never encounter the disease at all - DNA testing shows that armadillos carry leprosy
