  7. How was the grave at Sutton Hoo discovered? Sutton Hoo is the name of a hillside in Sussex where there were several ancient burial mounds. In 1939 the owner of the land, Mrs. Pretty, asked some archaeologists to dig up one of the mounds. Other mounds had been dug up before, but nothing interesting had been found. This was because the things in the other mounds had been stolen long ago. But this mound had not had anything stolen from it. It was full of interesting artefacts. However, there was no body in the grave, not even a skeleton. Only the objects in the grave could provide clues to who was buried there.
