The purpose of an outline is to: • Help brainstorm your topic • Organize your thoughts in a logical order • Prepare your writing for you • Help you classify, or group together, things that are related • There are two main types of outlines • Uses single words or short phrases • Uses complete sentences.

  3. Notes • There are certain rules that apply when using outlines. • Letters and numbers are used to begin each line. • Each level is indented beneath the one above it. • Each line begins with a capital letter. • There must be at least two items at each level. • (If you have an A you must have a B, If you have a 1, you must have a 2)
