  1. Shoreline Erosion and Deposition Julie Xu Caroline Payne Bailey Kennedy Lisa Pitman

  2. Questions About Shoreline Erosion and Deposition • What are some types of material that you can find on different beaches? • What are the two factors that determine the size of a wave?

  3. .:Wave Energy:. • The size of waves depends on the wind • Waves travel in groups • Sand is made up of rock and energy • Waves sometimes travel for a long time before reaching shore

  4. .:Wave Erosion:. • Sea stacks~ free standing rocks; waves eroded the soft rock and only the hard rock was left. • Sea arches~ formed when waves continue to hit the same place on a rock; waves cut through the rock. • Sea caves~ sea caves form when waves erode holes in rock along the base of sea cliffs. • Headlands~ formed when soft rock is eroded faster than the hard rock • Wave-cut terraces~ wave-cut terraces are formed when sea cliffs are worn back

  5. .:Wave Deposits:. • Waves carry sand, rock fragment, dead coral, and shells • Beach~ area of the shoreline made up of material deposited by waves • The type of material found on a beach varies because of it’s source • The movement of sand along a beach depends on the angle at which the waves strike the shore • The Longshore Current

  6. Vocabulary To Know~ • ~Shoreline~ • ~Beach~ • ~Sand Bar~ • ~Barrier Spit~ • ~Surf~ • ~Wave~ • ~Long Shore Current~ • ~Wave Trains~ • ~Wave period~

  7. Questions About Shoreline Erosion and Deposition~ • What are some types of material that you can find in different beaches? • What are the two factors that determine the size of a wave?

  8. Answers About Shoreline Erosion and Deposition • Materials that you can find on a beach are shells, rocks, gravel, sand, and seaweed. • The two factors that determine the size of a wave are how hard the wind is blowing and how long the wind blows.
